So I've noticed in my dad's '02 H.O. w/ camper on it, and my 91.5 pulling a big load, these Cummins seem to quiet out when they're under load. Less "clacking" if you will...why is this? The harder you run it, the quieter it gets...any answers?

Yeah they tend to clatter more at float cruise and quiet down with more fuel. Guess it has something to do with just a small charge with light throttle. Mine is real clattery with real light throttle.

Mine is the same way. Running empty, it is very load and clattery, but put a load or trailor, and it sounds very sweet, more like a big rig.

Your right.. They really do get quiet when worked hard uphill!

This 99 that I have is gutless as --------- came back from hunting last night with small trailer in tow weighting in at ???? 2000 lbs and couldn't accelerate up a 7% hill and have always lost about 1000 rpm shifting so back to the labouring stage for a shift. An other time how does a 11,400 lb one ton get 30 MPG this still doesn't get the attention of cry-slurrr or cummins I can't believe this.Of the 45 diesel enginesI have run this is the worst c------ that I have run.The little Kenworth with trailer and 420 D backhoe had alot more get up and go this is about 20,000 lbs . When I got this thing I complained all the time about welding trucks that could handly want to push me throught the intersection on taking off from a light. It revs up like a jimmy or sewing machine but NOOOOOOOO more power from the engine. I am sure that I figured it out but havn't fround the correct spec part yet. For I am just an electrician and seem to know more than both of the above teckies. What gets me is that they don't seem to have any tecknical knowledge or investagative observasional powers to fix something. Just (nothing found at this time). The diesel teck at where I bought this" thing" said that 130 out of a 235 RWHp engine was about right So this has been an uphill battle since.

I may not know anything about diesels, but I am not the one complaining about no power. Maybe you should buy one of those welding trucks

Darn it, now you gave me something else to pay attention too while driving. I never noticed any otf this little stuff (noises, rattles, etc) 'till someone on here mentioned it.

Back to the beginning question............A diesel engine is a engine which uses heat for ignition source. As the piston comes up close to TDC on compression injection commences and depending on cylinder conditions ignition may or may not commence immediately. If the combustion chamber is cool there will likely be a bit of fuel injected and accumulated by the time combustion commences. That bit then burns mainly at once making the crack you hear. Engines which are working hard and have high temps existing in the combustion space, ie head, cyl., and piston top have a prompt commencement combustion and therefore little or no accumulated fuel to go off at once. When the fuel starts to spray in it starts to burn. The Dodges with great big intercoolers tend to run very cold intake air at low load so ignition delay is the result.

Have you checked all the usual culprits?
Especially your fuel pressure?
Could be the VP injection pump going south.
My 99 Dually turns high 16 second 1/4 miles with the equivilent of an EZ box.
And I've towed my Daughter's Plymouth Colt on a U-Haul Trailer at 80 mph.

Yep Ed, and my 7000 pound empty trailer, 50 feet long, with the stock engine, defuels at 96 mph. And thats with 3.55 gears.

35 trips to cryslerr and cummins and over 50,000 KM'S to get this serviced and fixed!!!
Does it pass the 40 to 60 MPH test in time YESSSSSS.
Then leaving town I get passed by some truck like mine pulling a 30'+ 5th wheel and I can't keep up to him from the intersection. ???????????????
This is the only diesel that I have run of the 45 that runs like this thing.
