Diesel engine pet names...i.e..duramax??

Ok, so been thinking lately. You see Ferd..Powerstroke....Chevy Duramax....why all the pet names for their diesels?? Are you ashamed to say....Isuzu? Or International?? I mean.....Dodge comes right out and says it....CUMMINS, plain and simple, not pet names. Could make for an interesting bumper sticker of some sort.... "Don't need no fancy names, this truck powered by a Cummins" or something. I mean CAT says CAT, they don't say, giant yellow stinger or something....just CAT?? I guess I am more or less stiring the pot by doing some Ferd and Cheby bashing......any thoughts on this totally useless, uninformational thread I am posting??

Yes, I think Chevy is ashamed to say "Isuzu". I would be if I were them. Why can't a company the size of GM come up with a good diesel pickup truck engine on their own?

I don't know what Ford's excuse is for not calling it an International.

Touche!

Good point - but Dodge isn't ashamed to put the Cummins name on the truck. You don't see Isuzu badging on a Chevy.

What`s the big deal? You have a Dodge, but that isn't the company name. Just as my Chevy isn't the company name, just like Duramax isn't the company name. I drive a General motors with an Isuzu engine. There is that better? Why isn't your truck a DaimlerChrysler with a Cummins? After all, isn' that the real name? By the way, my computer runs on Microsoft XP

I don't think there's any 'big deal', after all, the original poster said:

''this totally useless, uninformational thread...''

I think it could be labled a 'hair-splitting' thread, hehe

brand name association.
Cummins - work engine
International - punny day cab trucks for running around town
Izusu - that gutless underpowered rustbucket of the 80's

Better question is why Ford and GM didn't go with a Cat, Detroit, or Mack engine?

Thank you G1625S.... Not meant to upset Duramax drivers...on a Dodge website.....just joking....don't get all fired up about it, just neighborly brand bashing. If ya want to here what I think about GM you have to visit the other site I frequent. This site is a toned back me on GM, just good ol' boy guys talking about whose is best! May you have thousands of miles of trouble free travel in your General Motors/ Isuzu truck and me with my DaimlerChrysler/Cummins truck!!

Because that would make too much sense.

I agree. Why can't Ford and Chevy just take a look at all the semi's out there with well over 500k miles that work hard everyday. They all have some brand of engine that are all inline 6 cylinders. It ain't that hard to figure out. If they would make a inline 6 Duramax or powerstroke, we might have some competition. Look at the 300 inline 6 cyl ford gas motors. They were some tough motors! Its gotta be that inline 6 design. But if they wanna keep on trying to make that v8 design diesel work, good. I guess we will just rule the road forever!

I think that the V-8 Duramax is proving to be more than comfortable competition for the Cummins.

The Diesels in light trucks aren't exclusively for working; a lot of people want them to be driveable and have good top ends for daily driving. Very few people work their trucks more than half the time.

I would much rather have a V-8 Diesel, but it just so happens that the I-6 Cummins can out V-8 any V-8 available. Or, at least it was that way until the Duramax came out. The Duramax will probably never be a million-mile engine like the Cummins, but it has that real V-8 power and that good powerband.
