Cummins to introduce a 6.1L??

This information was found at www.canadiandriver.com/news/031119-1.htm

"The third concept - and one likely to see production - is the Jeep Rescue, a large TJ-like SUV (123 inche wheelbase, 80 inches wide) that would compete with the Hummer H2. Power for the Rescue comes from an all new Cummins 6.1 litre diesel that produces 325 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. The new Cummins will also be available next year in Dodge's Heavy Duty Ram trucks".

Anyone heard about this??

For those that don't know, the H2 is based on a GMC SUV platform and engine. It's big and bulky and has very little towing power.

I don't see why it's necessary to introduce a 6.1L engine, when the 5.9L does the job so well. The current 260 hp/660#torque ISB made for dump trucks is the answer.

Torque comes first, horsepower just follows...

Cummins, please don't make the Navistar mistake!

Captain: Maybe you better check the weight specs first. 962# in the ISB5.9L vs 1530# in the ISC8.3L. Both have the same specs 260 hp/660# torque.

I hear a 6.1L HEMI is soon to be on the market.

Hmm? Maybe?

Re:Cummins to introduce a 6.1L??

Hey I know Cummins should make it a 5.5L and add all new powdered metal rods and a new super strong cast crank. Doesn't that sound like a grand idea? ;D

Re:Cummins to introduce a 6.1L??

A wee bit of sarcasm there!

Anyway a DOHC version of the ISB would be ok so long as it retained cast iron heads. Also keeping a non belt type cam drive would be good too but that is tough with DOHC. I guess a diesel really does'nt rev high enough or tac up fast enough to see the same kind of gains a gas engine sees with overhead cams anyway.

As for a 6.1 liter I'll need to look at the manual but I am sure that you can get that out of a 3g ISB block with just a overbore & hone and some bigger pistons.

The "replacement for displacement" is a bigger turbo or twins in the diesel game anyway. I'd rather work the head over, add twins, add fuel, improve the IC and a few other things before I'd dive into the short block to eek out .2 liters.

Re:Cummins to introduce a 6.1L??

Would that be the CumminGs Hemi Diesel? And will it be available with a turbo as an H.O. version?

See your local dealership for details!

Okay...but what does that have to do with a possible new Cummins??

It's necessary because they want to be competitive.

Personally I wouldn't consider the H2 competition for anything that has a Cummins under the hood. The H2 is usually purchased as a status symbol....not to mention it has very little offroading/towing capabilities. ;D

So why intro a 6.1L to compete against the H2? The H2 and the Caddy Escalade are popular status symbols. Jeeps have their niche and they pretty much control it. It also makes no sense to intro another diesel into the fray. The 5.9L is still a better engine than the Navi 6.0!
