I've been wondering about this for some time now. Is it possible to place a 12v into a speed boat, say around 18-20'? I know most of you know people who have used them in different ways from Fords, Jeeps, ect. and would probably be able to answer my question. I know that it might be a little heavy for a boat but it only weighs 148LBs more than a 350. What would you use for gearing? Would you have to place a complete cooling system for the motor or could you use the lake water? Have any of you heard of anyone ealse doing the same thing?

I just think is would be awsome to have a normal looking speed boat with at least one stack sounding like a big rig and rolling coal while going down the lake, especially while in party cove!

Any thoughts would be great!

 

AHH I think it wieghs a bit more then a 350 but I think its doable I installed one in a 27' cabin cruiser a few years back in stock form but it wasnt for speed but for MPGs and it trippled what the ford v8 was getting .I think you would need a good marine engien that turns high rpm,and I just cant see it living very long spinning fast ,but should still live as long or longer that a gas engine.I say go for it and be first

 

i stand corrected, a 12v weights 330lbs more than a 350 Chevey.

 

also cooling could be done with a heat exchanger ( what I used) then its able to go in salt water with out needing a flush and for gearing I had hooked it to a V drive unmarried by drive shaft don't remember whet the V drives gear ratio was but it was able to plane at WOT and with a 3200 GSK it had a few rpms left

 

Well then you have gave me hope that this can be done. I'm not needing it to be a fast boat but just fast enought to pull a tube or skier. How did you run the exhaust?

Cummins has a marinized series of engines. Full line of them from 4cyl to big 6. Match it w/a bravo x drive for I/O or or Zhurth trans for straight shaft thru hull. Most diesel exhaust is routed thru rear hull.
