Cold starting the cummins

8) I thought I would ask you experts. I know every one bags on the ford glowpug system. What does the cummins use? It has to have some sort of heating device. Thanks WRP 8)

The Cummins' use a grid heater that forces hot air into the cylinders.

Re:Cold starting the cummins

The Grid heaters will cycle and draw a lot of power unless you go over 25 mph....then they will shut off.
I saw what happens to the inatek horn when one of the heaters shorts out and stays on...makes a nasty mess of the intake horn...all brown and yellow and the wires were extra crispy.

Them heaters are real good at what they do and I usually put my running lights on during warmup so I can see when they stop dimming...then I know its nice and warm. The exhaust brake helps too...kinda like the Ford cold start flap, correct?

Re:Cold starting the cummins

The cummins also uses a fuel heater in addition to the air intake(grid) heater

It would also idle a little higher (750 rpm vs. 500) when it was around or below zero.
