Calling Pro Truck Drivers...

Hey guys I just picked up a International Dump Truck with a 13 speed fuller transmission. Can someone explain the proper way to use the splitter? The manual says I can only split from 5th gear and up. But it seems like I should be able to split the lower gears for heavy loads taking off? I have typical low/high switch on the right side of the stick and the splitter button on the left side of shifter handle.

I had a water truck with a 9 speed fuller and had no problems shifting. But I am having a some issues with the 13 speed/splitter. My main problem is taking off loaded. I have a hard time getting 1st, 2nd and 3rd to sync up. Maybe I am over revving...?!? From 4th gear up I am good. Just don't have a lot of seat time with the 13 speed yet and get a little frustrated when I take off in 1st loaded and can't get into 2nd and have to stop in the intersection and start again.... LOL.....

Thanks....

Dave

you can't split the lower range with a 13spd. A 15spd splits the lower range, 13 splits the upper range and 18 splits both. Your probably over revving. There isn't much point in going above 1800 in an older engine and 1500 in a newer one since there isn't any power there anyway.

thanks

Thanks for the post JFaulkner. I do try to shift around 1500. I will just keep practicing. Is low gear more for taking off on a very steep hill? Or would I want to take off in low all the time when loaded?

Thanks.....

start off by shifting at a lower RPM, gain a few RPM with each shift up (progressive shifting)

smooth is better then fast gear jamming, your truck will thank you.

forget about the splitter until you can shift properly

Yeah, you usually don't have to wind it up on the low side of the box, and shifting is easier if it's not wound up. Shift as soon as the motor will pull the next gear, on the low side of the box this might be 1200 RPM, making the shift to top gear on a grade you might have to be wound all the way up.

Start off in a gear that doesn't require you to slip the clutch much, it's all gonna depend on load and grade. In the work truck I might start in any gear from 1st to 5th depending on what's on the truck and whether I'm pointing uphill or downhill.

If the shift **** mechanism isn't dorked up, you physically can't shift the splitter into high in low range, and you can't shift into low range with the splitter in high. (And whatever you do, don't shift both of them at the same time while moving!) Here in flat Florida, we don't use the splitter until 13th gear is needed.

i ususly start in 2nd or 3rd loaded and in high range empty in a 13 speed that way you dont have to shift somany times. try shifting at a lower rpm. going to feel like your short shifting but it works

You sure can't better a 18 spd. Not quite correct but, a 13spd is a 18spd with no bottom on it. Wait till you get loaded in soft mud some time you will want the 18.
