Question Bypass staged twin setup, how to?

This dont do me much good to post this over at the Ford site so I want ask over here since its been done The dogers a few times. (Mod, please move this thread if its in the wrong place or can get more response else where.)

Ok, so now I have my stock Garret turbo still on the truck and added a HT3B with a 26cm housing. Problem is the stocker is hating life, toasted it three times in two months. I havnt had a chance to get my new gauge on but I am currently pegging a 60psi boost gauge at wo throttle.

So I want to add an external waste gate before the stocker and feed that to the 3b. How do I do this? What wastegate is best and with what spring? Where do I reference the boost from to control it?

I am gonna try and just put it on one uppipe and see how that works, kinda tight to try and tie them together.

Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated!

I am not real familiar with the Ford PSD's, but my diesel
shop (Scheid Diesel, Terre Haute, Indiana) is. They are
presently working with a customer on a Ford PSD which
I believe will have twins. Try giving "J.P. Pezan" a call up
there at: 1-800-669-1593. He should be able to help you.

A low profile wastegate I just bought is an Extreme Gate, from http://64.225.76.178/main.htm. Haven't tested it yet, but feel like it will do a good job. You may fins this a good choice because it is a low profile gate for use on motorcycles, but is a 1 5/8" gate.

You should take your pressure off the small turbo, assuming the small turbo is upstream in the intake of the large turbo. What many folks do is plumb it with enough extra hose to get over to a regulator mounted someplace. This allows adjustment of the wastegate.

You may want to consider running 2 boost gauges, before and after the upstream turbo, to see what the boost differential is. This may help diagnose your problem better. As I understand it, the turbos should work about half as hard in a twin setup because they compliment each other and spin slower.

Thanx Stamey for the link, I will check it out.

I finally just got my 100psi gauge hooked up and hooked the 60psi between the two. With my trshed secondary that has kissed the housing plentty of times I can hit 55psi overall and 25 off the big one. I think when its all workin right its more around 30/70 at wot.

Also what spring did you get in that one? And whereshould I reference boost to open it?

Thanx

I would open the wastegate before the small turbo (secondary) as early as you can stand to make the big one (primary) do most of the work. If your going to use springs in the wastegate then I wouldn't go any higher than 15psi and 9-10 would be better. The earlier you open it the more lag you experience on the street but better overall performance happens (read more hp) with lighter settings. I have the feeling the stocker doesn't like the front load from the bigger turbo though. If the wastegate doesn't work you might look into another top turbo.

No, J.P. @ Scheid is "short" for "John Pezan." John is the
drive-in manager for all repairs and maintenance at the
Scheid Diesel (Terre Haute) shop. My last name is not
Pezan.

Hope this helps clear that up!

You know, I didn't think to ask about the spring. I plan to control it with a regulator so I don't know if it matters.
I am not an expert here. I just understand pretty good how my twins are gonna work, and am applying that to your situation. I will be doing some R&D on my setup to get everything perfect.

Ya Stamey, I think I will probaly do the regulater thing and adjust it till I get the result I want. I would think a light spring like a 7psi and then controlled with a reg would give alot of options and adjustability. I really dont know though since I have never messed with a wastegate before.
