PSD Exhaust

My PSD seems to be lacking in the power department (oh yeah... it's a PSD). Anyway, it seems that I'm having to push on the throttle more than I used to to make it go. Could the cat/muffler be plugged up w/ soot? I've checked the air filter and it seems fine. But then again, there were a couple times I pulled a trailer w/ hardly anything on it and the engine didn't like that at all! I think the one trailer I hauled weighed maybe 2 tons at the most and my turbo was SCREAMING and I'm only going 55 mph on flat ground. Heck, I know gassers that could haul this trailer a whole lot easier than my truck.

I'm trying to figure something out because my circumstances say I can't sell it yet. But if I did sell it I'm afraid somebody would test drive it and find that it's a slug and not buy it. So, I'm trying to find out if there's something simple that needs fixed, doesn't cost a lot, and that I'm overlooking.

Oh, and the only mod I have is a Superchips Max Micro Tuner (it plugs into the ECM harness under the steering wheel and you erase the present program and upload the Superchips program). I have it set on the program that gives you about 40 HP/80 ft-lbs more than stock and it makes the tranny lock up sooner in 3rd gear.

I would if I knew how...I filled in some stuff on my profile, but I guess that doesn't do the signature stuff.

Go to "user cp" then click on "edit profile" then the sig. part is a little bit down the page on the right.

You might have a boost leak. Not very familair with the PSD engine layout, but take some soapy water and spray on intercooler boots, intercooler, and all boost fittings and pipes. Rev the motor-up and look for bubbles. Also look for obvious signs of damage and make sure all clamps are tight.
Anymore smoke than usual? Sounds, leaks, etc.? Engine idle okay?

Check around the uppipes for soot and also the exaust manifolds. An exhaust leak will effect it alot. Also inspect the IC tubes cause on a 99 I think they are aluminum and are prone wearing holes in them where they rub. Next is to pull the intake off and look at the turbo fins. If they look all chewed up then you have gotten dirt in there. Also reach in the turbo and check the end play of the turbo, there should be very little and the fins shouldnt touch the housing.

If it has a cat then gut it or yank it. Also check the ebpv and see if its stuck closed, I would gut it if I were you. If ya want even more info then check thedieselstop.com.

"Also check the ebpv and see if its stuck closed"

Is that the electronic boost pressure valve? Otherwise known as the wastegate? Or is it something different?

Now that I think about it, I may have a leak somewhere because usually whenever it's below freezing and at a certain rpm the truck will noticably lose power through a certain range and then I have to push on the throttle harder. I guess I'll have to get in there to see what I can find.

I'm thinking the cat/muffler needs to find a new home regardless of what I find...there's no need for them and they're just restricting my boost pressure anyway!

the ebpv thing is the exhaust backpressure valve and is used on a cold engine to help it warm up... if you have a cat, and if it is plugged up, it can cause power loss real good...

ebpv=exhaust back pressure valve. It is seperate from the wastegate. When you truck is cold it will shut and thats why it is so sluggish. If you take the down pipe loose you will see a valve right inside the turbo housing. My recomendation is too take that ebbv housing off and take the butterfly out of it completely. You will then have a hole left where the shaft went threw and you can either weled it shut, put a freeze plug in or get a carrige bolt and put the smooth side to the inside.

To get the ebpv off you will need a 8mm 12 point socket. Its a real pain in the but but the results are worth it. You will get definite seat of the pants power and about 50 degrees off of the egt's. Also gut the cat for simular results.

Oh and I forgot to add that if you do gut the ebpv make sure you unplug the accuator so that wont keep workin the rod causing a oil leak.

Man, if I have to mess w/ that turbo I'll be in a world of hurt! Drawback #369 to owning a V-8 diesel: If you ever have a problem w/ the turbo you're gonna hate crawling over the engine to even TOUCH it! I think I'm gonna ace the cat/muffler and see what that gets me.

welder27,
you been not breathing enough 7018 smoke. you need to get a few good wiffs of it then you will get a good motor. like a ctd for instance. 6022 deck rod helps quite a bit

Ya its a pain in the butt to do but whenever you get the courage to do it is worth it for sure. You can also just unplug the eletrical connection so that the ebpv wont come on when you dont want it to. There should be a two wire connector that goes into the accuator, just find it and unplug it.

I didn't do my research 2 yrs ago. Not enough galvanized steel fumes!
