What do you want? Auto or manual?
I can tell you the easiest ones are off the back of a 6BT in a dodge. For an auto, a 727, A518 or 47RH are the easiest to use or a 47RE with a manual valve body. For a manual, a getrag or a NV4500 would be easiest.

Head over here, there's tons of info on the 4BT

A buddy of mine went with a Ford ZF5 behind his 4BT in his 71 Blazer. It was about half of the cost of putting a NV4500 behind it.

He got the engine out of a Grumman Step Van which had some HD variant of a TH400 in it.

Scratch that, it WILL be manual. Does the ZF5 bolt right up? I know we will have to get a different flywheel because the motor currently has a flexplate for a chevy auto (th400).

OMG, this will be the coolest 4BT swap ever!!! I laughed when I saw what you were putting it in, because those things are soooooo lame, but that's what makes this project cool! You're gonna turn one of the lamest vehicles ever into something totally kick ***!!! It's gonna be epic when someone says, "Eww, an AMC Eagle.... hey, where's the turbo diesel truck I hear?"

I really want to see this project come to life. If you post a build thread somewhere make sure you let me know so I can keep an eye on it!

Which ZF5 did he use? Gas or diesel version? A friend of mine managed to find a bellhousing adapter for a gas Ford ZF5 and that's what he is using in his 78 F150 with a 4BT.

The HD TH400 your refering to is some called a TH475 and all that means is the gears are straight cut instead of helical.

Some of these vans, depending on the chassis came with manual transmissions, a friend of ours picked one up with a manual and sold the adapter to my other friend that has it in his Ford F150.

It's actually a friend of mine's project. He asked me to do some digging for him.

I believe the car is in Chetech (sp?) Wisconsin. My buddy goes to school with me down in Platteville. I honestly have no idea what color it is. It seems like it will be pretty cool when it is done. He may also swap a dana 60 front and 70 rear with 4-link suspension on air bags. I'm trying to talk him into making a hood stack as well. hahaha!

JD, I am not sure which ZF5 he used. It seemed like all(majority at least) of the Grumman vans from the West Coast were the TH475 but over on the east coast, it was the opposite. He found the flywheel housing from a guy on the east coast that wanted to swap to an auto so they traded.

What manuals will bolt right up without any adaptors? I have never done a tranny swap before so I am just lost. I am assuming that the motor had a th400 bolted to it, or a th475, so does a chevy manual bolt up to it too? Any input is greatly appreciated here. Thanks!

If you have the Chevy adapter, yes it does. The engine is canted 11 degrees on the Chevy conversion.

Thanks Guys. Greatly appreciated info.
