Beat it or baby it?
I don't drive my trucks "pedal to the metal" but I don't drive them like grandpa either. I'm not the first from the stop light but I'm not the last to the finish line. To me it's not about how fast you get to your speed, it's about how fast your speed is when you get there.
I tend to drive for mileage and my theory is, you can either accelerate fast and drive slow or you can accelerate slower so you can drive faster. I go for plan B. If I'm merging or such though, I give it enough to the point just before it's starts to billow smoke, just a puff or two. If I'm taking a longer drive or long trip, that consists of traveling at a constant speed with minimal stops, I'll "sh*t n' git", if you know what I mean
. If I'm towing though, I throw all the mileage calculations out the window and just have at it. Lately I have thrown mileage calculations out the window on normal driving as well and am actually attaining better numbers
.
But I also take very good care of them both. I give them there regular maintenance and like to keep them clean. The 06 I may wash atleast every 2 weeks when it's warm, or once a month when its cold. The 92' gets it once a year because it's missing clear coat, so dirtiness doesn't bother me as much.

Its a '70 w100 that started as a 318 3 speed truck w/ 4:10's - no radio

Now its got '67 3/4 ton axles (welded rear) a 4 speed, some motor mods for tq, 4 inches of lift on a set of 38" military michelins. Its nothing special - goes where the lil jeeps go - hence the dents

Im thinking about cutting it up since its so rusty and stuck all the fun stuff in my '87 truck - but gear it lower and toss my dana 60 in the front.
I drive slow over speed bumps too. These trucks are so heavy you should slow down for stuff like that because it puts more stress on parts (at least in stock form). I just drive mine normal. I wouldn't say I beat on it, nor do I baby it. BUT, I pay attention to things while driving. Like I don't mash the pedal when the tranny is shifting, I listen for peculiar noises, etc.
well see its hard for me 2 say what to do. Ive beat the crap outta mine (firewood, trailers, mudding, racing, power braking & numerous drag strip and road fun) everything was going great till i went to auburn and pull out of The Outback and boom started idling rough so i cut it off. it wouldnt start back so it cost me $700 to get it towed home at the shop for a month couldnt figure it out so got new fuel pumps, happened to drop oil pan and found tone ring in bout a million pieces.so cost me another $6000 for a motor. then i started babying it since then had to put on 3 drivers side hubs, 2 new calipers, 2 new rotors, 16 new flange bolts, apps, & track bar. so by babying it i had to replace alot off stuff but not as expensive as when i drove the heck outta it. so theres my 2 cents worth
forgot to add above that i also use it at home on the dairy farm so it gets it share of a beating from mudholes, feedlots, checking cows on the steep rocky hills to pulling equiptment. so thats pretty much what babying consists of
Get it up to temp then work it!
I drive moderately until its up to temp. By this I mean stay between 1500 and 2000 rpm, no lugging and no full throttle operation. Once its up to temp I'll have fun!
