I live in west AZ and my wife has been stopped twice this year for inspection. I've also noted quite a few CTD's at work using the "red" fuel.

We get non dyed diesel fuel for our agricultural use, Im not sure about other states but the diesel fuel supplier gives an option for either dyed fuel or non dyed and we go nondyed.

How did you tell they were? Seen them filling up with it? So the dye doesn't smell different?? That would be a definate indication, Diesel fuel that smells like.........roses??

Don't know about Calif but in Montana you can only get undyed without tax in 1000 gallon plus deliveries.

If some one needs the dual purpose of both on and off road fuel they could always run a second inbed fuel tank and have a switching valve like is used on dual tank trucks. That way they could switch over to dyed when they leave the roads and back to undyed when on the highways.

I know a fellow that ran dyed fuel in his previous truck and if he ran the truck down to almost empty and then filled back up with undyed fuel and threw a little blue two stroke engine oil in you couldn't see the red. Even without the blue two stroke oil you couldn't tell there was red or pink in the fuel. Maybe through a special light or something but not to the naked eye in sunlight.

they sopped my uncle in his 94 DMax and he was running the off road fuel. The fine he got was $1000. it was either the grand or so much a gallon. whichever was more. needless to say he wasent very happy and to the best of my knowledge hes been running the regular taxed on road fuel now.

Was it Merle Haggard who said

Cheat on your taxes, don't be a fool,
Now what was that they said about a Golden Rule?
Never mind the rules, just play to win,
Stab 'em in the back, that's the name of the game,
And mommy and daddy are who's to blame.

.....uhhhh I work on them daily. Whether it's a fuel filter change, swapping out a lift pump, or replacing a Vp, it's pretty obvious when there is dyed fuel in the system.

I had a delima once, Came into a smaller but full truckstop. Last pump of diesel was the last one Which also was the stations only reefer fuel station ( dyed non tax fuel) Of course on the front of the pump doesnt say anything about it. At the time fuel price was like 1.75-1.80, This pump as 1.68 so i didnt think anything of it. Pumped it in and just looked up at the post that holds the canope up and there it was REEFER. Im like ah whohaw. Went inside explained the delima. Attendant charged tax ( not sure how that worked, They pry pocketed the money but hey i had a reciept that syas i have paid tax) and thank goodness i had that. 30 minu8tes down the road i was stopped and checked. But my story ends with me just going home So no complaints
