Automatic Trans & Overdive Lockout

I have been thinking too much again. I thought I would start a thread on my opinion on the overdive lockout and automatic transmission. When I talk to my buddies they look at me like "Have been sniffing diesel again?" But the facts are automatics need to be locked up to avoid slipping (slipping creates heat) in 3rd gear, and if you don't use the overdrive lock out button and you don't go over 50 mph the trans is constantly slipping. Watch your tach and see what I mean. Use the OD lockout and the trans locks up when driving in town.

I have 155K miles on my auto and it works fine, granted I don't do any regular heavy towing, but I do tow alot.
I have been using this method for years, in town the OD id off.

I'm I all wrong?

No, you are right. The trans needs to be locked out of OD if you are constantly driving under 50.
The idea is to reduce the shifting first but to get it locked up is good to if it is pulling any weight.
A little advice, at first opportunity, get rid of the stock torque converter and get one that is tight! You will love it. Feels like a lot of extra power.
Don't fall into the damaging locked up converter and shifting. It isn't designed for that. REAL hard on the trans and u-joints.

Do yall with the new 3rd gen 48re still do this???

Sorry, I got lost between the first and second posts.

You do want to drive around town with OD locked out, yes? I have a 48re, and must confess that this is the first auto that I have ever owned in anything so need all the help I can get!

According to the owner's manual, hitting the tow/haul button on the shifter keeps it out of OD and locks up the TC in 2nd and 3rd.

My first two CTD's had the little 5 speed attached to them.

Thanks all!

Matt

I keep mine locked out around town all the time. It will also give you "some" engine braking not much though, but even a little will help conserve your brakes.

Geico266,

Go to search and type in torque converter, get a six pack and read for about an hour. Their are a lot of opinions and price ranges on tranny rebuilds, but everyone feels the same about going with a lower stall torque converter and more line pressure. just my .002
