8.3L Cummins 12 valve in 1990 Motor home 75000 miles

Are these 8.3L any good? I am thinking of buying the motorhome and want it to run for a good while yet as I will have payments. I am not sure of what engine I think the ISC is the 24 valve and I know this is a 12V but do they call it a C series? Any experience with them?

It is hooked up with a 4spd Allison and a two spd rearend.

Thanks

GS

they have been a very good engine for Cummins. they are a wet liner engine , so any overhaul can be done inframe. not saying it will be needing a overhaul anytime in the life of the motorhome. there are mods for that engine just like the B5.9 engine. it is called the 8.3 C series engine .

The only common problem I'm aware of is the timing case cracking. I'm not sure if this is a KDP issue or just that the case isn't beefy enough. At work we've had it happen to two of our trucks, one twice within 2 years. Both early '90's Ford medium duties with over double the mileage that the one you're looking at, though. We have one other 8.3 powered Ford with more miles than the other two, and it's still fine. Still, 2 out of 3 ain't good.

I've only been around the 8.3L, used in ag applications. The 8.3 is basically a scaled up 5.9. Although it does have liners, as mentioned before. Great engine. Never seen the timing case crack on any yet.

Funny you mention gear cases cracking, we get them now and then , and they have been fords. and the fords sure like to use them dual cyl. bendix air compressors , heavy suckers. always check the rear support brackets.

Wrong assumption

As it turns out the old motor home does not have the 8.3 L C series like the owner thought but it has the L10. I guess that is good for me as that is the option engine. Bigger more torque and most likely will work just fine pushing my motor home. Is the L10 wet sleeves also so it is re-buildable in frame? Thanks guys

It's a big engine alright. It says L10 in the book as option engine and one the id plate on the front of the engine. L10A 300HP is what is says. Previous owner says it gets 11.5 MPG or twelve. I sure hope so. It is a 40 foot and is heavy.

The grandpa of a friend of mine, had a 300hp L-10 (611 CID ) in his RV. He loved it. The newer RV that replaced it has a M-11 330hp engine in it.

It is wet-sleeved. If you have the room to do an o-haul, it could be done in-frame.

The L10 was the as stated predecessor to the M11 electronic engine and was used in class 6,7 and 8 trucks in a medium duty application. This engine was also used in various industrial applications and is very reliable. I used to operate a Champion grader with one in it and it had over 8500 hours without being touched other than valve sets and a water pump. They are a simple fuel system and easy to work on, 75k miles is just about broken in. PK

I drove many11 yard booster axle concrete mixers with the L-10 and no probs . Great engine , I preferred the M-11 ...........way more power ............but the L -10 's held up very well .

the L10 is a good engine , the M11 with higher horsepower have a block main cap fretting problems and should be check out if you have one , also install the block stiffner plate and update the main cap bolts on the M11, the ISM has been a very good engine also , but all three suffer from Rocker box oil leaks.
