550 Compressor
I'm fix'n to mount a 550 bendix compressor and a new ps pump on my 5.9. I have the water plumbing to cool it figured out and getting pressurized oil for lube to it is not a problem. But where can I drain the oil back to the pan seems to be the issue. Does anyone have any Idea's on this. Any help will be appreciated.
Putting a tee on the oil drain hangs down too far in my opinion.
If the drain has to be below the compressor you're stuck with the pan though.
You could remove the pan and weld a bung on it but that's a real hassle.
The timing case on the front of the engine drains directly into the pan but you'd have to remove the cover to see where you're drilling which involves replacing the gasket and crank seal.
If the drain can be slightly above the compressor, my bet is it can, I would just install a port on one of the valve covers.
If you don't want to weld use one of these Universal Drain Plug

I would not suggest that. If the added oil restricts the turbo drain it will push oil out the turbo seals.
A lot of guys who did twins have used a punch to make a hole in the pan and stretched it out with various tapered objects until they could tap it for pipe thread.

frantz makes a no drill fitting that uses a pin that is hammered into the pan. the pin is removed and a special fitting is turned into the hole. it's a pretty slick set up. wefilterit.com or ebay usually has some.

Checked out Frantz web Site. Thanks for info will be tig'n a fitting to pan that way I can make sure I get big enough hole to allow for drain back. Thanks for all of your input it was Greatly Appreciated
Try going to a Freightliner / Kenworth / Western Star dealership and see what they use to drain their compressors. You can get a 5.9 in light duty truck with air brakes, and I'm willing to bet that there is a similar one for the 8.3's.

I am assuming you are posting about your 98.
The 98 24 valve block has a second turbo drain port behind the one used by the existing turbo. It is simple to drill a small hole, insert a self tapping screw and lever out the plug. I’ll bet the pipe fitting needed to insert into this second port could be had for not much $$ from one of the turbo dealers.
