4bt in a jeep?
4bt in a jeep?
I have been thinking about building a jeep for a long time. Iwant to build one that has good power, but would like good mileage as well. Has anyone checked into this? I read here a long time ago about a 6bt in a dakota that sounded interesting. I am listing a few questions bellow if anyone could help.
1 what kind of mileage might this combo get?
2 How much does a 4bt weigh? (want it to not weigh more than a small block)
3 How much $$$ would this cost to do? (alot more than gas or?)
4 How much more work than a gasser would this take to do?
Thanks Alot
any advice is appreciated

MIlage should be around 25-35 mpg depending on your gearing.
a 4bt weighs about 800 lbs. (more than a smallblock)
I see 4bt's going for $2500-$3500 used.
I've been thinking about doing this to my land rover and I'm still researching.

4 cylinder direct injection diesel conversions are tough. You only have four power pulses per revolution, which is much harder on the driveline for a given torque, and a four has much more harmonic vibration, which will crack mirrors, windows, sheet-metal, frames . . .
The conversion would give you great milage ( I would bet closer to the 35 end) and be a blast to drive but you would need an nv4500 and a pair of dana 60's with 3.54 ratios (assuming that you want to drive on the highway) and some careful frame and sheetmetal modifications to keep it all together.
If you want to do a diesel conversion, you might want to look at other engines. I saw some 6AT's for sale for $1500 on ebay (try a google search) they are a 4 litre six, and would probably fit in where the Jeep 4.0 was . . . The little mercedes 5 cylinder is a great engine, but it has the sump in front, and not many adapters.
The 6.2 or 6.5 GM is an easy conversion -- bolts right up to all of the 350 adapters.

I have also been thinking about this. But being more into toyotas and VW diesels, I have been thing about using a 1.6 tubro diesel with toyota trany, transfer case, and axels. It would make a great combo in my 51 cj3a. There is a guy who sells adapters on ebay to mate any 4cyl vw engine to any trany that went with toyotas 22r. A 1.9 tdi would make a better combo but there is to much wiring for me. if you want more info on the kits let me know

There was a Jeep CJ at IRP a few weeks ago. He had a 4bt with twins. Very sweet set up for sure. i wish I had got pics but I forgot my camera.
We have been thinking about swaping a diesel in my sons 88 Toyota truck. As far as I have seen the 6.2 or 6.5 would be the easiest with a turbo 400 and a transfer case adapter.

Here, check this guy out!, he is a couple hours north of me, his name is Dan Mckegg, great guy! check out his 92 jeep wrangler with the 4bt engine! www.burnsvilleoffroad.comI actually went on the website and he has taken the writeup off of the site about the jeep, but if you go into the pix of lifts and scroll down to the jeep with diesel, you can click on it.
