4 wire cummins

Ok so I read somewhere, sometime ago, that the old 12 valves could be run with just 4 wires needed. Battery, alternator, key, and fuel pump. Is that it?
Id like to build a truck as basic as I can get it. Would there be anything else needed? What year would be my best bet to look for a starting point?
thanks for any info you can provide.

The fuel transfer pump is mechanical on 12 valve engines,
they are much like the fuel pump on a old chevy, ford gasser.

1 for the alternator, 2 for the battery + and - , 1 for the key, and a manual shutdown cable.

That will run it. It won't be pretty, but it will work.

If you convert to a manual shutoff and always park on a hill, you can do away with the whole electrical system.

not that bad. when we use a 12 valve for a pump engine that is basically what we do. we add the mechanical oil and water temp gauge

A 12 valve will run the same with electricity or without. The whole fueling system is mechanical.

The 12 valve is like a gasser with a magneto,as long as you have a way to turn it over you don't need electricity to run anything.

If you install a hydraulic or an air starter you can start and run it with no electrical system at all.

Just think after the next massive EMP strike you could still drive into town.

Or you could use a Coffman Starter and scare your neighbors.
