3rd Gen or F-350 Cummins Conversion?

I am looking at 2 options.

Option 1:

Buy a 3rd gen, manual, 4x4, quad cab, long bed, etc.

Option 2:

Buy a 1997 (My favorite year) F-350 Crew cab 4 x4 with a ZF-5-speed, put in a 12-valve Cummins and mate it to the 5-speed.

I figure costs will be about the same. Whaddya all think? Pros and Cons to both?? I need the room for my three kids and the mega cab is too expensive!

I voted for the F350/cummins. I like the 97 body style, and Im always looking around for a ford w/ a blown motor on craigslist. Sure would be nice to have a real crew cab and some of those nice alcoas ford put on their trucks!

I voted for the 3rd gen. Personally the only way I would ever take a Ford is if I already had someone in line to trade it off to. My son had a 99 SD. Worst quality in a "heavy" vehicle I have ever seen. Real PITA to work on under the hood too.

Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research and talking to a lot of friends on the subject and I am going to go with the 3rd gen. As cool as I think the "Fummins" would be, it is going to cost more than a good 3rd gen and the ride is going too be that much better.

I would get the third gen over an older ford! But that's just me. Now if it was the newer ford... It's just most of the older fords look real sloppy!
