12V or 24V?

Here is my situation. I have a 2000 Tundra V8. It is a good truck, but I want something that will tow my trailer better and get better fuel mileage. I am shopping for a Cummins as we speak, it has turned into somewhat of an obsession. I know trucks can't get great fuel mileage, but Cummins seem to get a lot better towing and empty than my Tundra EVER will. Any advice would be great. I am looking at getting a 4x4 Extended Cab. The one thing I like about the 98 and newer is the four doors. Another things is should I be concerned about getting a 5 speed or 6 speed, or should I just be concerned about getting a manual trans period? Thank you for your help.

1st off how much you willing to spend? 12valves gonna be alittle cheaper because of year models. 1998.5 and up gonna be 24 valve. 1998 and down is gonna be your 12 valve. I have a slush box on both of mine. Can't go wrong with a stick of any kind if you like to row your gears. find out about everything you can on your choice of ride. They all get about 15 to 20 MPG.slightly lower when pulling a trailer. Hope this helps some. Oh yeah lot more Torque than a Toy. Good luck on your choice of trucks

What is a slush box?

I guess I over thought it about 24V getting way better mileage than a 12V. Just seems a lot of the higher Valve cars in the market today get better mileage.

To tell the truth I NEVER thought I'd buy a Dodge, but after doing research it seems they have the MOST reliable Diesel on the market EVER.

I appreciate you Guys help.

Absolutely. 12v is going to be the cheapest to bomb too. Just changing the timing will help your mileage. You can actually get better mileage with a 12v than a 24v. The 24v is a good engine, but as you've probably read, the IP and LP leave little to be desired. I'm actually looking for a 12v right now, if that tells you anything.

I have owned both, and have no desire to own another 24v. I LOVE my 12v. And I hate autos to start with, so both of mine have been sticks.

I know you aren't looking for a high horsepower truck, but the big boys run 12v

I'm glad I posted this question. I appreciate all the help. Keep it coming guys. I am a sponge. I will be doing lite towing for now, a 6x12 trailer max weight of 2990. Will changing the timing be ok for towing? Do you change the timing electronically or is it mechanical? I want to know everything I can.

Hey, if I can get high horses I will. I am all about power. I have an auto truck now but would like a manual on the Cummins. I figure it is longer lasting and better for mileage and towing. I am starting to LOVE these truck. I looked at some F250s today and almost threw up, no offense to you Ford owners.

By high horsepower I was referring to the guys running over 1000... There are a few 24v over 800, and I think even a couple over 900, but the guys turing MAJOR power all have a p-pump

Oh ok. I see what you mean now. I don't want that much power. Just enough to lug my big edit around and my trailer.

What you want is easily attainable on a 12v for pretty much free Plus the cost of gauges.

What other mods are there for a 12V? I haven't seen any modules for them. They are OBDII so I figured they'd be flashable.
