07 toyota 3/4 ton diesel?
07 toyota 3/4 ton diesel?
i read in the wall street journal that toyota is building another plant san antonio texas, to introduce a 3/4 ton pickup, has any one heard of the possibility of a new diesel engine to go with it??
The 6 cylinder Hino is an 8 liter. I don't think it's going in a pickup - but if it is I want one!
Hino's small engine is a 5 liter 4 cyl. With the diesel power war going on right now, I don't think Toyota is stupid enough to bring a knife to a gun fight.
Of course these are the people who, when customers complained of low power in the T100, the Toyota response was to make a smaller engine standard - the engine that their customers told them was underpowered became the optional upgrade.
"You thought it was weak before - NOW how do you like it?"

The Japs will NOT bring a knife to a gun fight. Rather, if Toyota and Nissan start making the 1 and 3/4 tons that they had the prototypes of last year, Ford and GM and probably Dodge are all going under.
The Tundra isn't even the size of a 1500... No matter what they call it, that's what it is competing against. A 5 liter Hino Diesel, with Toyota quality, in a Tundra would fetch $40,000 easy. The big 2 1/2 don't even have a Diesel in that demographic! A 5.0 L in a Tundra would dominate!
And the Tacomas and Tundras aren't underpowered at all. Even the old R-22's that Toyota had ran like raped apes considering what they were... Those engines are the size of a bottle of Mountain Dew and can whip my butt (unloaded)... And the V-6's in the Tacoma's and V-8's in the Tundra's are perfectly respectable. And they last just about as long as the Cummins.
When the Japs start competing with Dodge, Ford and GM they will win... I don't got much faith there... (Not that I mind considering all of the Jap trucks are being made in America now, anyways...)
went looking for UD's online and found the specs on their engine... a 4.7 L Inline 4 or a 7.7 L Inline 6. Nissan is trying to take over the full sized market (A V8 as powerful as a Hemi with almost 20 MPG and a 9000# tow rating to start with). If they go into the 3/4 ton or 1 ton market, I see them going all out and putting a reliable, 7.7L from their Ultimate Dependablity line.

Considering the quality of my wife's V6 Tacoma 4x4, and the quality of the Hino in one of my brother's big trucks, I'd consider such a Toyota truck.
But here's another item for the rumor mill -- last month on a Detroit engineer's forum that pulls diesel people, someone asked if it was true that Toyota had approached Cummins, and the two companies were discussing a 6.8L engine designed specifically for the US and European light truck -enthusiast- market. The answer, from a Cummins engineer was: "Can't comment on that."
