As we all know, diesel is getting really out of hand with no relief in sight. I am going to start doing my own biodiesel but would like to do a 50/50 mix of Bio and WMO. Has anyone out there burned WMO in their CRD, 04.5 or newer, and what effect did it have on the engine besides better lubricity in this land of ULSD? I will be doing a 2 Micron filtration of the WMO, so clogging the fuel filter should not be an issue. Coking, Catalyst problems? Thanks for any information you guys can share.

 

I've been running WMO (1-2 gallons per fillup) in my '05 CTD. No problems at all. Engine runs a little smoother and quieter.

 

sdaly, about how many miles have you run the WMO? I am very curious about this, and honestly have considered doing it, but am also concerned that it could damage the fuel system on the Common Rail trucks. Do you run the oil thru a centrifuge first? What about its effect on the catalytic convertor? Do you still run the stock fuel filtration system on the truck or have you added an aftermarket high-end one ? Sorry to bombard you with all these questions, but it seems like you have boldly gone where no man has ventured to go before (and admit it publicly in a forum ), and actually run WMO in a truck with a fuel system that costs 2500 dollars to repair, and not to mention injectors, sensors, etc. But heck man, if this can be done relatively easily, it sure sounds a heckuva lot cheaper and easier than brewing biodiesel!

Anything that can offset the insane fuel prices we are all being hit with, is a help

 

According to the manual you can run up to 5% of WMO from the engine straight into the tank. I've blend more than that with Kerosene + PS & filter to 5microns with a waterfilter polishing step before it goes into the tank of a stock fuel system.

I do plan on getting an AirDog when the funds become available.

The 5% and 20% were referring to biodiesel blends not Waste Motor Oil.

No problem. To answer your questions, it's probably been about 2500 miles since I started pouring in WMO. No centrifuge. I just pour the WMO through a coffee filter (very slow), t-shirt material (faster), or Shop Towel (also faster), let it sit in the container for maybe a week or two, then it gets poured straight into the tank. I usually dont pour the last part of the bottle so to minimze picking up sediment off the bottom. My CTD's filter system is bone stock and it hasn't plugged a filter yet. My CTD is an '05 so I don't have an exhaust sweeper/catyllitic converter to worry about.

To mix it, I'll usually pour some in the tank, then add diesel on top of it, then pour in a little more oil, add more diesel, and so on, but it's probably not necessary. I usually also try to splash a little Power Service in the tank while I'm at it too.

I mentioned this to my neighbor the other day, who is an ASE mechanic with his own independent shop. He didn't see any problems with it either. He just shrugged and said that's a good way to get rid of old oil and save a few bucks.

 

What is the highiest % anyone has ran on WMO?

 

I put 5 quarts of 1 micron filtered WMO in my tank a few days ago. So far, have driven about 75 miles, can not tell a difference at all, exhaust smells no different, drives the same, etc. Wonder how long the cat-con will last now?

 

Currently Im running about 60% with no ill effects, been doing it for a couple of months, Ive been as high as 90% but it gets really smokey.
