ULSD and your truck, lift pump, filter and what notdo they get along

Well Guy's and gal's I have been noticing that there are alot more post in the past month about fuel related issues. I think it's a conspiracy it's going to be a very interesting. I have had fuel filters only last 1000 miles and be fully black and cloged. also I have just lost a my 2nd lift pump in 6 months.the fuel pressure has been al over the place in the past few months. I know that it s not in the fuel line because I have the vulcan kit. I am gussing that the new diesel is cleaning the Gunk Out of the fuel tank it's self. but how long can it take is there anyone else that having the same problems?? Is there an answer. I thought about droping the fuel tank and steam cleaning it out???? In the last couple of weeks I have been double filtering my fun by putting it in to my transfer tank then in the truck from there. it seams to help a little but not much. the fuel is clean coming out of the transfer tank. well Lets GET SOME REPLYS ON THIS ONE.

There are reported problems with the new ULSD, but cleaning action is not one of them. Nothing in the ULSD that would do that, AFAIK. Less lubricity....yes. Fewer BTU @ Gal...maybe.

If you were running Biodiesel, all you say would make sense.

FWIW, I dropped my tank recently (at 114,000 miles) and was impressed with how clean the tank was. The fuel module design seems overly complicated to me, but appears to do it's job well. Some small particulate sitting/floating on the bottom of the tank (maybe a tablespoons worth).

I would look elsewhere for the culprit!

I agree with rjohnson on this one. I have had no problems with either truck. My buddy owns a diesel repair shop and he has seen no problems either. You may have a contaminated supply source or picked up a tank along the way.

I know the diesel fuel in MN has a 2% blend of the soybean bio in it, but i am pretty sure that started before the USLD was inplemented. I don't think that little bit will have much mass cleaning effect on the fuel system. This summer i was expermenting with the B100 slowly adding more per tank to see if the effects it would have would be worth the money savings. I expected some filter clogging with the miles my truck has on it 90,000, but had no issues even running 30%. Unless you had run really dirty fuel for a long time i couldn't see the fuel cleaning the tank that bad. Good Luck

I want to blame my fuel leak at my fuel heater on ULSD but many people had probs there before. When I started running B100 I had a nasty fuel filter after about 1000-1500 miles. Change it and monitor it.

I know this sounds crazy but I'm running power service White bottle most tanks and my fuel pressure is crazy, If I don't use it, it's a constant 16 psi idle. With it, it will run 9-10 psi most times at idle then jump back to normal 16 psi. All this started about 3-4 months ago with the introduction of ULSD.

Coincidence? I've removed the isolator and have a needle valve now so I know it's actual pressure now. I can't figure it out. Anyone else having similar problems with additives and new diesel fuel?

Not trying to hijack this thread but I've been having problems ever since the new ULSD was introduced. no power loss just weird pressure readings.

Most of us in Minn know about the 2% bio. Early on there were some problems with the first release of the stuff which was right before a major cold snap. Many trucks had fuel filter problems including me. It was pulled fromthe market for a month or so untill it got fixed. I'm very careful about where I get fuel and keeping the tank full.
I actually had run about 3000 miles with b-20 the summer before the 2% went in and had no trouble at all. I even replaced the filter right before the first of the Minn bio. It lasted about 3000 miles and untill it got down to --15 and 20 miles out in the prarie before plugging up. It was a cold change. The second time was was about 6 weeks later and -15 again but at home in the parking lot. Since then no problems at all. I think the first b-20 loosened things up and it finally just plugged up in the cold. My filter with 15k on it looked pretty clean this time.

well Just to bring this one back alive abit, I have been tearing into the truck replaceing the lift pump put for a walbro kit, due to stock pump going out. and what not thats a whole story in it's self, they forgot to put the spring and the ball in the regulator. In the midse iif figureing out that was missing. I pulled off the fuel filter. and Found it was Full Of Brown MUCK. water and dirt. I think that it's time for a locking Fuel door and fuel cap. the dirty fuel did not come from my transfer take because that goes though a clear filter/water separator before it goes into the tank. I have toyed with the idea of running dual filters on my transfer tank filter it down to 2-5 micron or so after the water separtor on the transfer tank. and fill that every time before filling the truck.

Little talked about but worth every penny, IMO. It illiminates one possibility when we search for those hard to find solutions to head scratching problems.
