Standard WMO vs. Synthetic WMO
Yes, there are some disadvantages, one being cost if you aren't willing to extend your drain intervals. There were some specific engines that did not do well with synthetic oils many years ago which has given them a bad rap. The cummins engine in our truck and almost all engines have no problems at all with synthetic. The other disadvantage that I can think of is that it can make oil leaks much worse.
But the advantages often outweight the disadvantages. In my case, the cold weather starting ability and the ability to go longer between changes make the choice easy.

Dino oil is NEVER preferred over synthetic. Syn costs more for sure, but in my case I change oil once a year, so for me its actually cheaper. I run syn in everything at my house that takes oil. Harley, car, truck, chain saw, weed whip, well you get the picture.

From what I understand there has been problems with synthetic carrying away soot from the turbo and was not recommended by some of the aftermarket turbo companies.. There was a lengthy article awhile back that I'll try to dig up..

But if its the real a synthetic oil like Amsoil, Redline or Royal Purple then I would not advise it being used in your fuel tank as it will not burn as well as Dino synthetic oils like Delvac, Rotella, Delo 400 etc.
I love synthetics. Its been below zero here that past 4 days and my truck likes the synthetic much better. Ever try setting some oil out in the cold for awhile and see how it pours? I had some 75-90 amsoil gear lube in the back of my truck last winter when it was about zero and it poured better than reg 80-90 at room temp. As far as leaks i switched to running synthetic in everything about 2 years ago truck had about 140,000 on it and i really haven't experienced any more leaks.
