Hydraulic Oil
Hydraulic Oil
Does anybody use hydraulic oil for fuel? I could possibly have access to three 55 gallon drums of NEW hydraulic oil that is not compatible with any of the hydraulic systems of the equipment at work. What do you guys think, would it be worth using if I got it all for free or a cheap price?
I would think you may want to check to see if any additives are mixed in with the oil. If it does have additives mixed in you need to see if they could cause problems to the fuel system or when burned in your engine.
Hmm... I figured hydraulic oil would lubricate. How do hydraulic pumps get lubrication? From what I understand all oil, water, and most liquids are non compressible. Correct if I'm wrong though. The only thing I was really worrying about was additives, or at least thats all I could think of. It just sounds real tempting, because that is a lot of fuel. But rebuilding the motor isn't so tempting so I don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks for all the input guys so keep it coming!

Some hydraulic oils are non combustive and if vaporized will instantly choke and blind you. These might work if you're trying to out run the law but no good for grocery getting.
It would depend on the specs of the oil. You could google it and read the specs..

find one of your buddys that have a diesel tell him your idea and that you'll donate 30 gallons of it to the cause if he will run it in his truck and if his truck takes a puke then you know that it won't work...
Hydraulic oil is similiar enough to #2 in terms of compressibility, BTU content & lubricity to safely use it for fuel - since it's new, no need to prefilter it and add 1 gallon per tankful - that'll keep any additive package ppm low enough... might not recommend it for a 6.7L, though.

It is a lot of free fuel, the more I think about the more I want to run it.
I've always heard these p-pumped trucks can run about anything.
I found it was 30 weight oil, and I hear of people running a pretty rich mixture of WMO, but I don't know how similar the two are.
And why would you only add one gallon per tank full, xlr8r?

Oops - I didn't notice what was under the hood of your '98... must've been in my HPCR mode!
12V's will prob'ly burn anything you can get through the P-pump... kerosene & JP-5, corn licker, used oil, Freedom Fry grease, tequila, brake fluid, tranny fluid, whisky, gear oil, vaseline (you carry some of that for when you fill up at the diesel station, right?
