Is there much difference between "Off road Fuel" and Highway? Will the newer diesels run on offroad??

 

It is my understanding that the Off road fuel is identical to the on road. Only dyed because you pay less taxes and if you get dipped and caught with red fuel its pretty heafty fine!

 

Some places located here in the stix, still have "true" off road fuel which is about 1000-1500 ppm/sulfur content and some stations still sell LSD/500 ppm (listed on the pump), while most stations have ULSD/15 ppm. For the most part, depending where you are in the country, all fuel is the same and in some cases, mixed together (between the 500 & 15 ppm), so as Roperteacher said, the dye is just for tax purposes. Not worth getting caught running it or the related fines.

Definately some discussion on the diesel forums of guys getting pulled over and getting their tanks dipped. Not worth the fine if you ask me.

 

i have been stopped and dipped in Minnesota (where i'm really from), when they do it they pick the busiest place and stop ALL diesel's!! ok so i got a little bored one day while i was home after being stopped..... i stopped and watched them, not 1 diesel car, semi, truck, or suv got by them..... not one!!! in minnesota the fine is something like $2000 for having dyed fuel in your truck, sure you can refuse to let them "search" your truck but then they write you a $1000 ticket and set you a date to show up in court..... so then the judge gives a court order to have the tank dipped. usually this is where they catch they guys, and then they write you the $2000 ticket plus the one you already got plus court fees.... over $3000!!!! but to answer your origonal question..... yes, in MOST places they are the same fuel just off-road is dyed red, some places do use different fuel for off-road but it still is marked on the pump. the big question.... is it worth it???? thats for you to decide!!!!
