Does a flexplate really need to flex?
I am trying to design a flexplate to adapt cummins to 4l80e. I have found this adapter set in a couple of places:

There are also the billet flexplates like this:

Do these plates actually flex?
If I use a standard flywheel and drill it so that it is perfectly centered will it actually need to flex?
I will be doing a couple of minor tweaks to the pump (93 ve) to improve overall fuel economy, but in my (somewhat limited) understanding, this seems like it would work.
Any and all advice, criticism, and suggestions are welcome.
Thanks, Jason

I'm a bit concerned about putting a billet one in mine. The alignment is, I think, the main issue A flex plate can allow a bit of misalignment and still not stress the crank or tranny shafts. Not an off angle of the cases so much as off center spline or a spline not perfectly straight.
I once saw a broken crankshaft that was traced to a rigid "flex" plate.

Flexplates let the converter deflect. The crank moved front to back (thrust bearing) and the flex late absorbs shock between the crank movement and the mass of the converter.
If there is a mis-alignment, the flex plate will crack.
