Big dreams: My next truck? 68-72 C10 2WD 4BT?

Hey guys,

So, you know how you sometimes get an idea in your head? Well, I can't get this one out of mine.

My current truck is a 91.5 W250. It's big, it's 4x4, it's powerful, and I drive it empty 99% of the time and pulling my 3k lb boat the other 1% of the time.

Basically, it's waaaay more truck than I need.

I do need a truck, though...home depot, pulling the boat, etc.

So, what I'd like to get:

A rust-free 68-72 Chevy C10, shortbed, 2wd.

A 4BT with the VE. I know VE, and I'm more than happy to stick with it.

I'd like to put a 5speed behind it, and a good LS rear end (2wd and slippery boat ramp aren't always a good combo...so LS is at least a must.

That's pretty much all I know. Living in Jersey, I'll probably have to look far/wide for a body in nice shape. Doesn't matter...it's a dream right now, so I have all the time in the world.

The 4BT, I know I can find...be it from an auction and scrapping the rest of the truck, or just getting one from someone who has already pulled it, or a shop. I have seen them anywhere from $1500 to $3000.

For the tranny...I don't know. Part of me wants to just think an NV4500 would be the way to go...from what truck, I don't know.

I just think that'd be the best...probably get close to 30 MPG and just be simple and reliable.

I've looked through a lot of build threads on various forums, but never seen one specific to that combination.

That is all...just hope...and a dream.

Bad timing, I just gave away a 72, 350 engine with power steering and disc brakes in front. Wish I kept it.

Man, that's just about the easiest swap going.

Get your 4BT from a Chevy P30 van, Manual trans if at all possible. Get everything, motor mounts to Hydraboost, it all fits. Pretty much a bolt in, even the mounts are correct. For a trans, I personally would use the Chebby NV4500, no 5th gear issues, and they sell for about half what the Dodge units do. About the worst part of that sap I think would be cutting the driveshaft to length.

Oh yea, we even used the hydraboost unit from the P30 on mine..........
