5.9BT to SAE bellhousing to GM 4L80e conversion
I've got a '95 5.9BT that came out of a pusher diesel school bus, so its got the SAE #2 bell housing and the oil pan sump towards the flywheel. I also have a GM 4L80e transmission that I want to put behind in in my '82 Chevy C20 someday, with a US Gear OD unit.
Its been a few years since I was working on this project (life/wife happens) and I thought I found an outfit that made a GM/SAE bellhousing and flexplate adapter for about half the cost of the typical GM/Dodge adapters... Or would I be throwing the SAE bellhousing away with the Cummins/GM adapter plate when I do the conversion?
Also, I'm pretty sure that the 4L80e came out of a gasser, so I recall that I needed to get a different torque converter, and a tranny controller. Am I on the right track?

I'd be interested in your sae 2 bellhousing for my 60 project, undecided weather to put a 5.9,8.3, or a CAT in her though and that project is a ways off. I want a big truck trans in it.

You want a big truck transmission? I've got an Allison MT643 that came with that 5.9BT, just waiting for a new oil pan and somebody who wants her. Interested? If it turns out that I'd be losing the bell housing anyway, it could go with the tranny.
It's a long way off for me too.

Oh, I found the place I was thinking of that did the SAE adapters:
Phoenix Casting & Machining, Inc out of Juniata, NE. Maybe this will help somebody else closer to their project than I

Rather than playing around, why not just get the right block adapter?

Well, if the SAE-GM adapter plate costs half as much as the Dodge-GM, why would I want to pay twice as much? Or am I tossing the bell housing in favor of the adapter plate, regardless of what type of donor vehicle or bell housing the Cummins came out of/came with?
Put another way, if the adapter plate replaces the bell housing, then that pretty well answers my question of which way I go and I end up going the same road as everybody else. On the other hand, if the adapter plate normally goes between the bellhousing and the GM tranny, then I got a peach of a deal that will save me $700 on the adapter plate.

That allows you to unbolt your SAE block adapter, bolt on the GM block adapter and flexplate and bolt the 4L80E directly to your 5.9.
No adapters, no fooling around, and you can sell your SAE stuff.
Guess I always try and keep it as simple as possible.

I agree with patdaly, just buy the adaptor and flywheel and be done with it. They fit perfect. I used one to adapt to a ford 4R100. I like the PCS trans computer.
