3RD Gen under water?

What is necessary to change on the CTD (3rd) gen to hit deep water crossings? My question is because Ive never got the water above the door so what things specific to the diesel need to be vented? Also with diesel temps what is the likely hood of a cracked intercooler, engine block, exhaust manifold, and so forth?

Ive taken gassers through some deep stuff but not the CTD....YET. I was also wondering if anybody has had the motor die on them in the water? I guess those stacks would be necessary now. I was just lookin for a good reason to do it.

I can't imagine a $40000 truck in a deep water crossing would be much fun. Think of the common rail electronics, the monster air intake... Couple that with the fact of >17:1 compression and you're begging to buy a new engine when the rods are destroyed by hydrolock.

I would go buy an old truck for a swamp crosser...... that way you are not out so much moeny when something breaks, and the less/no electronics on the old ones make them better for being underwater

Just my $0.02.

Rought the tranny, tcase, and diff vent lines up and snorkel it. Diesels do better in water (generaly) cause of the lack of spark plugs, distributor, coil, etc. The manin thing is if you dont go over the intake you should be ok, with my afe I could prolly go through 36-40"s if water with no issues. My dad has taken his 6.0 door handle deep with no problems.

The thing I would be worried about most is sinking the front end of the truck. These CTD's are very heavy up front and not exactly known as the best wheelers

And the air intake (given) and the blow off tube. Vacuum system will need to be very tight. protect that turbo. that is the main thing I would be worried about. thye get kinda hot, and suddenly cooling one off could be bad. very bad.

Whoever said the CTD's weren't the best wheelers didn't know how to drive it. If you know what you're doin it will do **** near anything.

Something else I just thought about is the crankcase breather, just above the diff. Water SHOULDNT go in there but I would deffinately rought it up too.

Hey thanks for the replies guys. I guess the cool-off of the hot metal parts is the scariest thing. Thats the same way you temper metals for some hardening processes. I think Im still gonna do tha snorkel, (which is creating a few unforseen issues) and run all vents up and get it wet. I cant work on my truck right now since it is at the jobsite in Fort Worth so I'm just compiling some info for when the truck comes back home. You guys think of any other ideas just keepm commin.

Heard That. Im thinking I might want to get some of that wax to coat any exposed electronics with.
