Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

fuel pumps

are many guys using FASS or airdog type setups on rigs?

this guy comes into the shop on a REGULAR basis. like neurotic regular. but hes got 2 million KM on the clock so it must say something. But hes useing the FASS to feed the OEM gearpump. like 30" in front of the OEM pump I'm not getting the point there.......but do others use these pumps at all?

First time I've seen any kind of aftermarket pump on a big rig. I wouldn't think the Fass could flow enough to keep up (I'd check kingpins though, outside tread of that steer looks cupped, lol)

i have installed one on a freightliner. driver reported marginal milage gains but he said it idled smoother. they are to remove air from the fuel and filter better depending on which filter they use.

That mechanical lift pump on that S60 could blow a FASS out of the water as far as flow goes. I know the FASS is supposed to be good at removing air and all but come on, is it worth a little bit smoother idle?

Heck, the little cheesy Mack supply pumps can push 100 plus PSI all day long for millions of miles plus if you get the metal drive gear version.

some people think they work. the guy i put it on for also had pittsburgh power stuff and switch his front drive axle to a tag. i guess there is a xm station about that stuff and drivers bring in all kinds of stuff that produce minimal gains if any. but some drivers cant be told no.

Lots of these on Class 8 rigs all over the country, they flow a ton of fuel from what I understand.

Seen FASS type setups on class 8 trucks long before I ever saw them on pickup trucks. Seem to recall seeing an add for FASS in Overdrive magazine in the early 90's, could be wrong about it being the FASS brand was a similar fuel filter/pump setup.

Have two transfer pumps in my shop. One for fuel, the other for coolant. Old 8V92 pumps..I don't know why one would need that kind of setup...On a Series 60 your only going to flow more than return can flow out of the back of the head.

They are probably using them not because they feel the stock pump doesn't flow enough fuel, but more for the Fuel/Air separation and increased filtration afforded by such a set-up. That is the big advantage to these systems.

I can see that, and its a full flow bypass pump right? so its just supplying the gear pump with 17-25psi. cleaner fuel with no air.

I guess its just another option, I personally see 90% engines that come in have Davco Fuel Pro modules on them.

I'm actually thinking about a new fuel pro 482 for my 12v. just cause I can get one at cost. and still use a spin on Detroit 2mic secondary. on the pump discharge.

i dont know if anyone has put a sightglass inline ona fuel system but you get just a little air even with all new hose and fittings resealed or replaced.
