Replace P7100 ??? *gulp*

Looks like my fuel rack/plunger/something is sticking inside the pump.

Throttle was stuck up. Then stuck down (idle, hard throttle, could not push). No indication of linkage problems.

Sure was fun bringing it from Ponoka to Edmonton with no guarantee of power, or the choice of what power level.

Anyway, it mostly liked to stay stuck at about 2500 rpm depending on load. By the time I got back to Edmonton it was acting mostly normal, but noticeably less smooth on the throttle engagement.

So... is anyone good at P7100 pulling/installing and timing? I don't know that I have the time + skills + tools to do this properly on my own (well, I know I don't have the tools, time could be tight, especially once I get a presumably rebuilt pump... it appears going into these is a no-no for people at my level, and...)

Any other ideas?

Good 'ole mechanical engine though... still got me back to town to switch to a different vehicle. And had I been really desperate for time, I would have just kept going to Calgary...

I'm afraid I might have to buy a temp replacement vehicle!

If worse comes to worse, call Kenny about that 95 for $2k. That would be a good temp vehicle.

By rights, you don't need any special tools to remove or reinstall a p-pump. Basic hand tools. When you go to reinstall the pump, pin the motor, and pin the pump. That will get you timed to whatever the shop sets the pin at in the pump, probably around 16 degrees if you send it off to a performance diesel shop, probably 13 if you just get a stock rebuild.

Where are you looking to send your pump? I've heard good things about Columbus diesel, that will be where I send my pump whenever it comes off, sometime next year likely.

Don't suppose it happened in the mini cold spell we had? My brother's '98 is infamous for freezing the throttle cable and doing almost exactly the same things you're describing. Might be something as simple as that...

I have the timing tools as well-but have yet to fully use them.

You should bring it to next weekend GTG. We can take a look at her for ya. Nothing else we could see what timing you have set-up. A few guys here are pretty good at tuning the older P pump trucks.

P-Pump power baby!!! It is not an uncommon failure for the pump from what I have read. Earlier years seemed more prevalent.

I also had the frozen throttle cable issue. It was a little random... and scary at times!

On another note, if you think you might try replacing your throttle cable, a throttle cable is well over a hundred dollars I think. There was a TSB out for something to do with the throttle cable....... fraying I think. Anyways the tsb throttle repair kit is about 1/4 of the price. Just looked it up. It is a safety recall. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/970.htm Just give them this part #CANZ9700 It is for a 94-96 but might work on all years of 2nd gen 12v's.

10-4....Mine died on my 95 two years. Not to bad to replace, but there is one bolt that is a really pain, one that connnects the pump to the motor.A long extension and a unversal fixed that problem.
