Regen?
For those of you that still have your DPF, how often does it regen? My truck has just over 4k Kms on it, and it has done the regen cycle 4 times already, seems a bit excessive to me

It totally depends on how the truck is run, if you idle or do lots of city then it will regen lots, work it very hard and always pulling heavy you may never see a regen. I also believe the manual trans makes a difference too as in more regens with the manual trans. You may want to keep an eye on your engine oil quantity because if it's regenning lots there will be lots of oil dilution.

That's what is getting me.. I never idle the truck other than what happens at a traffic light. And it gets a ton of hwy miles... almost all,, and I drive fast too... plus probably almost 2000 of the 4400kms have been towing heavy

There are different types of regen that occur on your truck Kev. I'll try my best to explain. There is a full dpf regen and there is passive regen's occurring. Typically a full dpf reg will only occur when the dpf can reached enough differential pressure (basically plugged up). I doubt that has occurred yet. Basically take about 5-10 mins of full hard idling or the truck will seem to be a beast (no power, and some burnt smell from under the truck will occur).
The passive regen occurs to warm up the dpf. This will open the egr solenoid some and cause the butterfly valve to close/restrict air flow. Basically lots of egt's, doing the stuff everyone us not to drive under.
I would personally just unplug the egr solenoid for around town empty driving. Haulin/working the truck, plug in the egr solenoid. Might do some funny stuff for awhile. I did this for my truck until I deleted the truck.
You could run the sims, unplug the dpf pressure sensor and get a delete pipe. I've heard that the 100ohm resistors work the best. Still will require a code clear every once and while.
For deletin the truck go with the H&S, very easy and has a nice screen. I'll show you my truck when I come up and drink all your beer in your fridge.

How can you tell if it is regen? Just by the way it runs - lack of power, or can you see smoke out the back or is there an indicator? I am up to 3,000km and I dont think I have seen one yet, but it has been 90% towing heavy.

well for me it is easy as I have the edge insight monitor. But the other tell tale sign is watch your mileage on the dash monitor. It will suddenly drop drastically. And I can also smell a little when it does it, but I imagine not everyone would be able to smell that

I idle my truck way more than I should at work and it regens quite often. I notice my fuel mileage take a pretty big hit and the exhaust STINKS like chlorine or bleach and sometimes it jumps up to high idle around 1000 rpm when it's warmed right up.
