Nv5600!

Anybody have a 5600 4x4 tranny kicking around that they want to part with? Or know where to find one? Mine lunched today-apparently it sprung a leak that I didn't detect and it tore itself to pieces. My truck is an '01 with the big input shaft.

It's my work truck-so I'm digging as hard as I can to find something to get it back together on my next days off. My brother is good enough to lend me his '03 for the next 3 days until days off-but after that I'm on my own!

Thanks
Jason

Apparently I broke my tranny bad-but not terminally. Getting rebuilt as we speak-should have it back by Thursday by the sounds of it. I have a few other things to tackle before install for convenience sake-so hopefully by the end of my next days off I can get the old girl running again. I had to scrounge up another work truck to carry me through-bought a tough but workable '02 Dakota CC 4x4 4.7 auto to weather the storm. I'll know tomorrow what it costs to run-but out of the gate it looks like it might be a push to run it or the Silver Cloud for fuel. Might be time to relegate my diesel to trailer pulling and severe duty use until the price of diesel corrects itself....

On that note, I can get between 17-18 MPG operating with my '01-which I have never bitched about. The truck weighs in close to 8500 lbs. with a full tank of fuel and me, pulls 35" rubber, and cuts a lot of wind. When it died, my brother was good enough to borrow me his '03 2500 QC 4x4 HO/6spd to use. Didn't care for the ride (short box and the tires inflated to the moon for trailer towing) and still don't like the DR series toughness compared to the BR-and admittedly I lightfooted it to keep from wrecking it-managed 22 MPG doing the exact same run I do with mine. No big tires or extra weight-but mine has never done that well from new. Maybe there is something to this CR stuff!

Pro Trac Gear in Edmonton-they were recommended to me by a friend of our family who owns a wrecking yard in Trochu. Seemed like good guys to me-the proof will be in the pudding I guess. It should be back in Drumheller tomorrow but will not be installed and running for a couple weeks by the looks of things. The original had 427K on it without any issues until I ran it dry. Got lucky apparently-I roasted pretty much everything at the front of the transmission-but did not crack the case. They showed me a couple of dead horses they had there that seized the rear bearing and split the case...at least I escaped that.

On a side note, the Dakota turned in a tick under 19 MPG on its 1st tank operating. Admittedly, I babied it-and it hauls way less on way shorter tires than my diesel-but I have never gotten better that 18 with the diesel-and with gas cheaper than diesel, it's a no-brainer...once the Silver Cloud is fixed, it sits until diesel gets rational again, I have some evil conditions to brave that require 35's and LSDs, the Dakota needs attention, or I have a trailer to pull. How pathetic is that? I paid $3500 with the GST for the Dakota-and I will probably put another $1K into it to bring the mechanicals up to the point that I am comfortable with it for oilpatch use. That's 6 months or less worth of payments on a new CTD.....if it died in a year and I had to go get another, I'm still money ahead.

That would be him-and he is a good guy. I suspect if you get on his bad side, it's not so much fun.... but we've known him for close to 25 years now. If he doesn't have it, he generally knows where it can be found. I've gotten lots of stuff from him-and given him lots of stuff over the years too. With him, you get no BS-which is a good thing as the older I get, the less tolerance I seem to have for that.....!

Jason, why don't you just take some of that cash out from under your mattress and go buy a new truck? All those big operating bucks are probably making a big lump in the middle of the bed anyway.

Good one Don-I just about fell out of my chair from laughing so hard! I don't get paid enough to buy another new truck for $60K that is made of paper and gets crappier mileage than the old one. Plus the old girl has had a ton of work done to it over the last year or two-front end is completely redone including rebearing of the diff and getting rid of that stupid CAD, the rear diff is rebearinged, steering including the box and the track bar. I am working on a transfer case upgrade and possibly a motor upgrade or two as we speak-and I have a bunch of little work to do to it-and then it will be good for a while. So much for the pile of money....

When you get back down to this part of the world, you should drop me a line and we can see if we can hook up for a beer and tell sad stories to each other about the oilpatch and dying recips-I think I have a couple good ones saved up from inside the company....
