Hey guys, in the process of doing my clutch and kind of dropped the tranny off the floor jack and lost a bunch of tranny fluid all over me and the garage floor. So I figure probably should drain the rest and put some new stuff in. I new this crap was expensive but 32-35 bux a liter at chrysler????? I've looked for Castrol Syn-Torque but can't find it. GM dosn't know what the hell I'm talking about even with the part #12346190 I dug up on line. Anybody have any ideas were to find the Castrol stuff or better prices anywhere around Edmonton?

When I went to change mine and didn't like the price, even the Chrysler parts guy said there was other stuff cheaper. The only one I found local that states it is approved for the NV4500 is the Amsoil one. I took the side plate off and cleaned mine out real good then filled with the amsoil recommended fluid. What a difference in shifting.

 

Try a couple different dealers. I changed mine about two years ago. It was about $21/L from dodge, $25/L from GM. Some guys say GM is cheaper. I found Dodge was.

 

Try to find a big dealer ship preferably GMC.... you do have the right part number .that is the Canadian part number I just did a Nv4500 swap last month and got sale price of 7 $ bucks a liter yes 7

 

Shifting in a good way? Do you remember the name or number of the Amsoil? I phoned three Edmonton Dodge dealers and it was 32-35. I bet the Castrol stuff is cheaper but can't find it.

 

I like Redline oil. It's readily available at Mopac & other local speed shops.
It came down in price a few years ago & is now very reasonably priced.

I run Red line MTL in my NV5600 & 75W-140 in my AAM rear axle. It's a "real" synthetic & cheaper than the name brand pseudo synthetics at Cdn tire & Walmart.

I put 50,000 or so HArD miles on my red truck with GL-4 Penzoil synthetic 75w-90.


has to be GL-4 rated oil HAS TO BE GL-4 rated oil. Joe the oils that are recommended for the NV5600 are not for the NV4500.

One of these days I should drop my oil as a PM and replace it with new oil..I seen a post a while back where CMP had the oil on sale.....And I forgot..

 

I know this is off topic - but Joe I would absolutely NOT run Redline MTL in an NV-5600. Its far too heavy. Its a 70w80 and the spec for the tranny calls for a 5W30 rated oil. I changed to this fluild and while its a good oil - its not suitable for this transmission.

When I changed mt transmission oil to Redline MTL - I immediately got a grind when going into third gear. I switched to Amsoil MTF and the grind went away immediately.

 

NV4500 oil .......Dodge dealers (p/n 4874459) and GM dealers (p/n 12346190).........exactly the same Castrol Syntorq LT rebaged for Gm and Chrysler. obviously theres alternates right. make sure you get the right oil alternative. IN a GL-5 oil its the sulfur and phosphorus used in the extreme pressure additive that kills the syncros in the NV4500. thats why it has to be a GL-4 rated synthetic.

I don't think that Penzoil Synchromesh is correct for the NV4500 but it is correct for the NV5600.

Actually, Redline MTL is the correct viscosity & characteristics for the NV5600.

This is confusing but gear oil and engine oil doesn't use the same numerical rating system. ie. 10W-30 engine oil rating is not the same as 10W-30 rating for gear oil.
If you go the Redline or Amsoil websites & read the fine print you will see that.

eg.. for Redline 70W-80 MTL: "Satisifies the gear oil viscosity requirements of 70W, 75W, 80W, and motor oil viscosities of SAE 30, 10W30, and 5W30"

The Amsoil website has similar info. Amsoil is even more confusing since they use both 5W-30 & 75W-90 to describe their manual transmission fluids.

Redline MTL also replaces ATF in many manual transmissions. My T-5 5 speed in my 5.0L Mustang calls for ATF but Redline MTL is fine for it.


For the NV4500 in discussion, Redline MT-90 75W-90 is the correct heavier oil & is equivalent to engine oil ratings of approximately 10W-40.

Also try The Gear Centre.. I got my NV4500 from there and they were only $25 a litre for the Dodge Oil.
