NV4500 fluid!!
#16
I have been using the Pennzoil in my NV4500's based on flawed research I did several years ago. Extensive research today reveals I was completely wrong.
I need to get the proper oils in my trannies. Thanks.
Did come acoss this link, it was quite interesting.

I was at the gear center last week and asked what a rebuilt NV5600 cost as I think mine isn't shifting as smoothly as it should.
We got onto the topic of oils and they said to ONLY use the Dodge stuff. Especially in the NV4500. Rebuild guy there said that even though the Penzoil is rated for it not to use it. Says he's seen many fried trannys from using the wrong oil. He said my tranny is probably toast from the Penzoil I put in there last year. Not sure what to think of that, seems if the oil was wrong it should have blown up by now. It did some pretty hard mountain pulls last summer dragging around the Redneck Toyhauler.
I asked if they carried the Dodge stuff and they don't(not in Calgary anyway) they just buy it as needed per job.
I've heard that friction modifier sometimes helps, like for limited slip differentials. Anyone try it?

When I did my fifth gear nut I was able to talk the dealer down, 27/litre I think I paid. Still to much though. A guy should almost order a drum of it and then part it out since only the dealers seem to be able to get consumer quantities of the stuff.

$27/Litre for transmission fluid is nuts.
I stopped in at Mopac in Calgary yesterday:
Redline MTL for the NV5600 is $13/L.
Redline MT-90 for the NV4500 is $13/L. and they had plenty in stock of both tupes.
Also don't focus on the name brand of oil, focus on the correct oil for your application.
Saying Penzoil toasted your tranny doesn't make sense.. What TYPE of Penzoil tranny fluid did you use?
Btw, Dodge or GM or Ford or BMW don't make oil, they just relabel an existing oil.
To say to only use the "Dodge" stuff doesn't really make technical sense.

The Dodge oil is the Castrol Syntorq. I was given the same story from the Gear Centre in Red Deer, but they had it on the shelf. I am using a Boss Synthetic Lubricant for the short term and will be switching over to the other stuff here in the spring.
