new question,,,,

Ok,, good call Curtis,, I had forgotten. I just have never called them that,, Ok,next question,, what size is the banjo bolt on the back of the head, and what is the easiest way to get at it? I tried for about 20 minutes tonight, till my hand cramped up so I quit

Thanks

I can't recall if it is 17 or 19 mm hex.

That said, I have found that i can reach around behind the head from either or both sides, and it helps to have the valve cover off too.

You might disregard this advice, as I also have a 7'2" wingspan, and rather long hands, so I can reach a lot of places that most people cannot.

On the upside, you can usually crack the banjo with a regular length wrench, then either spin it out with your fingers, or with a ratcheting stubby wrench.. or a non-ratcheting model, should that be your only choice.

good luck with it

I believe they are 19mm. I can get at them with a reg. combo wrench on my truck, but your 03 might have a tighter firewall.

Its a smaller size than the other banjo's (at least on the 24VP engines). I would guess 14mm or 15mm. I have a set of short wrenchs. Remove the valve cover, it will give you abit more room to wiggle in there. Worst case, is remove the retainer bolt on the fuel drain line (its by the tee) and off the injection pump. The first I removed the head, I tried to moved the head forward two to three inches, then found that line still attached. It was my first time and its a pretty flexible little line, and it survived. 12v, have the drain on the injector body and its a way better design. Kev, just wait till you have to put that line back on. Removing the line is the easy part and that drain all ways seems to leak. Same goes for that darn #6 injector line. How many injectors have you pulled on the truck? After awhile, the cross head tube tips gets damaged when you pull the injectors out. That might causes some fuel leaks and high rpm misses at wot. Fun stuff. I'll have my head off and have a new head gasket installed this weekend. I've probably done this about 7 to 9 times with this truck. Fun times buddy.

LOL,, this is the 2nd time for this head,, 1st time was when we did the head studs,, but that was along time ago allready. I got 5 of 6 injectors out last night, and a big cramp in my hand trying to get that banjo out.... the last injector is fighting me all the way,, I am having troubles to get the tube out, so that I can lift the injector.. I am thinking I will wait til I get the head out of there and pull it then while it is hanging from the crane.

Sounds like a plan to pull it out on the hoist. Just be careful not to shear the tip when you are slipping it around on the block..

To get the number six connector tube I needed to remove the hook that is bolted to the back of the head. I used a 13mm gear wrench with a flex head. I just loosened the two bolts that holds it on the, top one is slotted so I then just rotated it out of the way. No problems taking the connector tube out with that out of the way. Also I never took of the bolt that's on the back of the head off but I would try a gear wrench flex head as well I am guessing it's a 19mm or 17mm. After the injectorss and rockers are all off it should make getting at that bolt a little easier.

Get a 2x4 or something similar and place between the head and the block when pulling it out, just so you won't risk hitting the deck or damaging the last injector still in.
