Dana 60/80
Dana 60/80
I have been giving this consideration for a while now and its on my list of things to do.
When i bought this truck I had V8 mentality, meaning 4.10's faster in the 1/4 mile well I was wrong there not realizing the RPM range I would be making power in.
Long story short I want 3.55 gears for my truck was wondering if anyone may be looking at 4.10's in the future we could work out a deal.

3.55s were good gears in my red truck with 35s and a hell load of horsepower it went fast even with a stick.
you are going to want a traction aide for the rear, and a good one. Detroit Tru-trac for the D80. helical gear limited slip. tough. no horsepower limitation as per the literature from Detroit.
like this.....you can see the end of on of the gears there. this one is in the D80 in Frednecks truck now. and we all know fredneck is HARD on his junk.

I think I paid $600 usd at the time, and our dollar was much weaker than it is now. from randys ring and pinion in Washington or Oregon or where ever its at. actually I've bought a few things from randy's. always the best prices I could find there.
you might price out the 3.55 gearsets there with a true-trac. might be the best price even shipped. ring and pinions aren't that expensive themselves. the thing is if you're swapping gears. you'd want to put a master overhaul kit in at the same time. because you're already in there. nows the time. I don't think you'd need anything in the front. if you were offroad or sledpulling maybe yes then. but not for the road. rear for sure though, but not the front.

im thinking just might put away the coin now for doing the front end overhaul all at once as well...
CAD delete
Manual hubs with 35 spline axles
change the gears and over haul the D60
and do the rear at the same time.
my biggest fear is the speedo

just get the input recalibrated. i can't don't recall if that year is a mechnical speedo or electronic though. anyways thats a minor deal. Mr. Speedometer here in calgary can fix that up for you easy. you don't have to go to the dealer.
Just a thought, Why don't you just put on bigger diameter tires and forget about changing the gears. Save some money. Stock is 32in, throw on a set of 35in tires, you probably drop engine rpm by 200-300rpm.
I want to upgrade my front and rear axles next year. Using the right parts, you can have on heck of a decent driveline.

Running the 33 over the stock size tires will drop engine rpm by a couple hundred rpm's. 35in tires, would get you close to 3.73, which aren't to bad if you tow. The 3.55 are the sweet deal, I run that gear and 33in tires. Pulling steep hills pulling a 15k trailer, the truck complains some and I have to kick her out of OD.
Tires are cheaper way to go than changing gears.
Luke, that axle you sold Freddy, whats the axle out of? I want one? I want to run my dana 60 35spline inner/outer with the chevy knuckle kingpin and use the 3rd gen brakes. Yesterday, I tried to fix my driver side hub and upper ball joint so I can safely drive the truck. I can't bundge the outer hub nut. I bent my 3/4in drive breaking bar by trying a 4ft snipe.
I'm going to just blow torch off the nut. Darn thing.
The upper ball joint, I can wiggle the dodgeknuckle/spindle by hand, so its pretty toasted. I wish that I owed one of those hi torque 1in impact wrench.

Mikester that is THE rear out of my old red '98.5.......I pulled the 80 out and put a 70 in it from my 1995 donor truck before I sold the DEMON. both trucks were 3.55s so it was just a bolt in.
Luke, I'm building up a dana 80 rear axle. Would you use a true-trac or a locker design center section?

Fred's rear diff, is it a 35 spline or 37 spline axles??? How easy do you think that it will be to transfere my old dana 70 disk brake onto that dana 80 axle? Might have to build some adapters or just use some ford stuff.
Thanks bro.
