I replaced my Factory AM/FM Cassette with a single DIN. How does your new setup measure against the factory dimensions?

I've been considering replacing my OEM cassette deck for several years and recently had an extensive online chat with one of the technicians at Crutchfield. The tech informed me that the OEM radio size in our First Gens is something called "DIN and a half," so a "double DIN" will not fit without some hacking.

Crutchfield recommended a "single DIN" unit that has a fold out screen for both GPS and a rear camera.

I bought my factory replacement from Crutchfield. The mouning kit was included in the price for the radio. I have no need for GPS, so no screen needed.

That pic almost looks like they took the 4wd light and status lights out, relocated the hvac controls to where the radio is supposed to go, and mounted the double DIN in the new space.

Do some measuring and see what space you have there, may work out with almost no cutting, besides the trim lines. Probably would need to make a mounting plate for hvac controls like in the pic

Double din stereo mod

I know this thread is old but it's relevant to my situation. My stock radio is toast and of course it was a 1.5 din which presents a problem. Obviously I could get one of those bezel kits and go with a single din but I'd rather go with a double din.

The photo in post #3 is basically what I want to do except I don't like how he ditched the status lights. I want to relocate the status lights to the location of the cargo light switch, move the HVAC controls to where the radio normally belongs, and put a little toggle switch under the dash for the cargo lamp.

This will free up the upper area for the double din. I prefer the upper location because it's much easier to see and operate. Not only because it's larger, but it's also more at eye level and it's angled slightly upward.

It won't be too difficult (I hope). Just a little careful dremel work. Besides, my HVAC controls are already not mounted properly and sit cattywampus in the space (accidentally broke the bracket when I was replacing my odometer gears). Basically it already looks like Edit anyway so I can't really make it look any worse.

Has anyone done anything like this? Any photos of first gen stereo mods?

I haven't done it yet, but I plan on opening up the stock radio location for a double din. there is enough space top and bottom to clear it, it has been done.

as for what you're considering, that is going to be a nightmare extending wires for the message center and moving the controls for the HVAC(not just wires!)

Cassette deck? If you see one with an 8 track and blue tooth, I am in....

But seriously, how will does your hands free work in these loud trucks? It's a great excuse for getting off the phone with my wife that I can't use in the Honda that has blue tooth and is quite.

double din first gen dodge

I had to do a little cutting behind the dash with a oscillating tool. I used a shallow 6.8 double din instead of the standard with cd player and it came out good. im happy with it
I got the kit on jah3d.com

I have no idea is going on with my factory original Am/Fm/CD/Cassette. Parked it for 11 years and not quite sure. Not important at this time. The CD player didn't like home recorded copies of CD's. I used to have a kickazz home system I would remix the sound through the equalizer.
