Anyone work with fiberglass?
Anyone work with fiberglass?
For hobby stuff, that is. I want to make two A-pillar pods into one. I figured the best way to make it look like that how it should be is smoothing it out with glass. Anyone have a good place to pick stuff up, how-to's, etc?
Wow. Thats a project. I think I would try to glue the two pillars together with some Bondene or similar plastic solvent and make up the seam with some model car plastic filler. Its like bondo for model cars. Then you could sand and paint it without loosing the surface finish.
do a search on 12 volt.com, I remeber reading an post about how to make dash stuff out of ABS pipe, you basically just somehow shave the pipe into shavings(I think he used a wood planner) Then mix with acceton to get a good consistantcy and you have plastic glue.
I remember reading that too and thought it was pretty interesting. Anyway, I have no constructive advice at all but I'd sure like to see pictures of the finished product.
I tryed the ABS pipe shavings and actone mix..To restore cracks in a plastic grill..Didn't work well for me..the stuff wouldn't setup and stayed soft.I went back to the Marglass repair method..
Viking plastics (in Edmonton) is (or was...haven't been there in a few years) for telling you what you need, and how to do it. They range in quantities from very small to industrial.
The only thing I know about fiberglass is... If you use epoxy instead of polyester resin, the results are much more waterproof, and stronger (Dad is building a boat, so I'm learning at 3500km...)

Lee Valley Tools sells West System Epoxy. It's used in the boat industry for just about everything. I have used it for various wood projects mostly.
It sticks to anything, is carve able, sand able, shape able, you can cut threads into it, virtually indestructible when cured. Comes as a two part system and there is enough there for many many projects.
Can't remember the price but it's not bad for the amount you get.

It's nice stuff to use. All kinds of fillers to add for thickness and such. I had to cut threads in it with a tap for a project years ago and I know the piece is still being used today (outdoor garden swing) and that's from 15 years ago.
It's a very well known product in the boating industry.

Times two on the West System epoxy, it's awesome stuff. I've used it for all kinds of things, and it's crazy strong. They also sell different filler material to mix into it for different purposes.
