5th wheel with 2nd trailer regulations
Thinking on doing the same thing with my fiver/boat one day---good info to know---right now with the fiver and truck i'm at about 45 ft,with a 18ft boat/trailer it would be close.Might not be able to do it even with my fiver being a cab-over design(36 FT Titanium).
clay,
If building a toy hauler out of all that and you will be offroad, I suggest going back to the gooseneck for better articulation and less stress on the truck frame. 5th wheels are greater for the paved roads, but not so good for the truck with the twisting of some of our backroads. Just a thought to consider.

I have been doing this program for 6 years now and a goose ball is more flexible but you must have safety chains attached to an approved connection. Never have bound up the 5th wheel connection turning in the rough but must be more or less straight and level to connect/disconnect. You can get away with 21m but the part most people forget is the regulation requires that the rear of the second trailer is visible in the mirrors. Oh yes I know we have seen lots that don't make that correction but if the cop wants to be nasty and knows the regs he will ding you and make you drop one trailer. And now we will all hear about the millions who have never been told or heard that and do it all the time. For a quick reference remember the operator IS responsible for the safe, legal & responsible operation of his vehicle subject to the interpretation of the investigating officer. Check my photo album you will see version #3 of the hillbilly hilton we have built. Used to pull it with my 2500 (4800lb front, 6100lb rear, 11,400 trailer) you will be surprised how quick you hit 25,000lbs gross and 68 feet long. Upgraded to a 3500 C&C with 9'6 deck, had to lengthen the upper 5th 16" (thanks DC for under engineering the 205L fuel tank/frame length). 3500 + 24' goose with 10' camper loaded + Jeep TJ + 18' foot car hauler + 4 Quads & 85 Gal fresh water tank = 30,880 lbs/70.5 ft. I have been stopped but all my lights are LED and work and the car trailer had 2 5' buggy whips 8'4" wide at the very rear visible in the mirrors flipped up into tow position. Your brake controller will need to be capable of powering 4 axles and the adjustment on the trailer brakes will determine the direction everything goes or stops in an panic stop. Most people clip curbs with a short box and 25' of truck/trailer stretch it out to 65' or more and it gets dangerous. Best part of this setup is we can pack the extra water, fuel, etc and there is always a deck at your back door. You will out handle any truck and camper in the corners due to the width of the axles under the load but you need double the space in a camp ground. Fuel milage??? 7-11mpg but I will go where toy haulers won't due to ground clearance. PK
I dragged doubles in MB/SK/AB/MT/WY/CO at 13,800 KG, 72 ft long...loaded with strongman gear. Even hauled a load into the West Edmonton Mall [twice] with one trailer, ordered a coffee at a coffee shop from the window of my truck on my way to the ice palace to back down onto the surface with the gear. That was fun! A few shoppers were surprised to see a dually with a trailer idling along though the mall.
I had 5th wheel up front and my controller can handle and recognized how many axles I had with brakes. Rolled across the scales several times, got stopped and checked twice with that set up. No violations. If I was registered for 11,000kg on the truck I could pull doubles in BC too. Just thought I would post...even though it has nothing to do with a toy hauler.

P Kennedy, you were hauling a car trailer behind the GN? I had also heard that the 2nd trailer had to be under 3500# and single axle.
The wildest I ever saw was in Utah on my way to Moab. It was a 3rd gen dodge dually hauling a 30ft 5th wheel, hauling a 16ft car trailer with a Jeep on it. Following RIGHT behind it was another 3rd gen dually with the exact same setup. That's a LOT of money for play toys!

I would have to look up for sure but I don't think they've placed any weight restriction into the regs - just so long as you're within GVW. The second trailer can be as many axles as you want, as long as each axle has brakes.
Jerry, you would have to check with your local laws on that. It seems to be different between each provence/state. Here in Alberta there isnt a limit on the length of the first trailer, just on overall length
