Upholstery places around Edmonton?

Anyone know any at reasonable rates?

I've got the seats pulled out of the Iltis and they need to be redone. Just some plain new padding and heavy duty vinyl in olive drab, dark brown, or black will do the trick. My Step Dad had offered to do it, but I believe they're beyond his capability with all kinds of rivets and crap.

Taking her out to Cadomin in June and started some sprucing up. Heater core is out for a cleaning, gotta replace two radiator hoses to it, coolant flush, get some new used batteries, clean, remount a tire, and seats of course. Then she's ready.

there is 5 star on 127ave just east of 82st, cant vouch for cost though, I have not worked on an Iltis for a couple yrs now, but always wanted to swap the 1.6 or 1.9 TD from a VW in there, as its pretty much a drop in!

do you have any trouble finding parts? if yours still has the stock pump up near the fuel tank, you might want to have a spare, as they are famous for failing at the most inappropiate time, but 9 times outta 10 if you smack it with something it will run again and get you home

Got a line on one of those motors? That was the next plan for later.

There is a guy, in Edmonton actually, that has any part wanted or needed. No fuel pump issues yet, but thanks for the tip.

I'll try to drive by that place and took a look tomorrow.

I'm open to any others as well still.

Don't know where in Edmonton you are but when I worked at Lakewood chev we sent quite a bit of work to Wayne's upholstery. They did very good work, but when my dad took his boat there to get a new cover made they had it for almost a whole winter and didn't touch it at all.

Thanks nickg,

I called over to 5 Star this morning to see if they had their hours on voicemail. Low and behold, a real person, Dennis answered the phone. He was only going to be there 'til around 10:00 and quoted me $950 over the phone without looking. He then went on to say if I could be there by the time he left, he would take a better look.

Since they were already out, I loaded them up and popped in. Price changed to $750 + tax, and if I liked what he had in stock, he would be able to have them done in +/- two weeks. I paid in full just in case I have to have Dad pick them up.

That's done. Now off to Rocky's to get the batteries checked and matched. Clean the heater core and change out some hoses later.

I've been thinking of other Iltis issues and the things I remember are the trunnion bearings go bad easily and even in the Military, before they took them outta service we had a hard time getting the kit to rebuild them, the water pump pulley was prone to "walking" off the shaft, the mod was a small tack of weld to hold it in place. Timming belts would break (from age) or strip off teeth, no worries as they are non interference (no valve damage) techs replaced brake shoes when they were perfectly fine as they look wore out when infact there is only 2.5mm of shoe lining above the rivits on new shoes, they just look wore out until you compare them to new shoes. keep the brakes adjusted properly, ie tighten them till they lock up then back off till you have a slight drag. any other way will result in poor braking performance. Make sure you use the battery hold downs as the batterys will jump up shorting out when off roading. If you flood the engine, sometimes the spark plugs will short and even if you remove them and dry them off (torch) they will NOT start the truck, until you install new ones.

I'm sure there are other things but its been I while since I worked on them, Basically its not a bad jeep, but it does need a little TLC. IIRC the other thing that is odd was that they designed the steering so that the Rack and pinion is bolted to the fire wall, which by automotive standards is a no no. as all steering componenents are susposed to be hooked to the frame, not 1/2 to the frame and the other 1/2 to the body.

should you ever need any help with it, feel free to drop me a line I'm sure I can help...if you need it

Thanks for all the information! I will keep that offer in mind. I did see the deal with the batteries and instantly figured that when I saw the foam folded over on top when I pulled the old batteries out.

This weekend has been set aside to rip out the wiring in the truck and work on the Iltis. Got the heater core is flushed, and I have some new coolant hoses to put in. The nice thing is that the previous owner did a lot of work in the engine bay like plugs, wires, stater, and alternator.

And for what it cost me, if something serious happens, .......................

Seats should be ready next week.
