I have the same truck, except auto with 4.10s. If your getting 15 stock I say count your blessings. I was getting 12.9 before the emissions fell off. I'm now getting 15.5 deleted. My 05 2500 got 18.2 unloaded with 3.73. I call bs on a lot of 20+ mpg claims.

I get 13mpg _/-.5 towing 9800lbs, 15-16mpg hyw, 13-14 city. The 4x4 may be costing us 1-2mpg but I'll put up with that for it.
8900 miles on it now and counting until I'm certain there's no hidden issue - then I'm sure things will fall off it!
I'm just a little concerned that here in Obamahahaahaa land of illi-noise the wackos are going to get inspections pushed through.

15 mpg out of a 1 ton 4x4 dually is not bad mileage. The vast majority of people saying they get substantially better than that with any of the brands are blowing smoke. If you think your mileage is bad, get you a 4x4 3500 dually with a gas motor. 10 - 12 mpg highway, 6 - 8 loaded all day long. Figure that fuel bill along with the dismal resale value, and there's something you can't afford. Sorry for the long post, but sometimes it doesn't seem folks keep reasonable expectations for fuel mileage.

Not to mention its an emissions engine. Its gonna get crappy fuel mileage unless you delete it. Its like the sunrise and the tides. Aint no stopping it.

As to the OP, I tow the same kind of weight with my truck, and while it will consistently get 17.5mpg+ empty on the highway, if I get better than 10 towing a load, I'm happy. It's a lot of weight, and it takes power
But, your empty mileage is more average than mine. I got a good one, even before I deleted it. I actually saw VERY little mileage difference with deletes, but I saw a lot less fuel in my oil at every oil change. To the tune of 1 gallon less.

Signature600, please read the post again. It states 4x4 3500 DUALLY. Dual rear wheels normally make 1 - 2 mpg difference. Been running diesel pickups since I was rodeoing in college in 1993. Put a lot of miles on all of the brands for years pulling horse and stock trailers. Back then the only 1 tons that would get over 15 mpg unloaded consistently were the Dodges. The GMs and Fords wouldn't do it because they all had 4.10 rear ends in them to get them to be able to pull anything. The first powerstrokes would get around 12 combined unloaded and 6 - 8 loaded. The mileage on STOCK 1 ton duallies today isn't that far off from what what its been on STOCK 1 tons in the past.

I'd trade it for a 2wd and I've read unplugging the EGR helps a good bit.
But I think the real reason I'm posting is to say if you are towing that much and getting hand calculated 10mpg you are doing pretty good. My 5.9 gets about that towing less, that's with me driving it though and it's lifted.
