Removing the adhesive residue will require rubbing it away with a rag dampened with some form of solvent that breaks down the adhesive. The 3M General Purpose Adhesive cleaner #38983 is very effective. However, rubbing alcohol can be used but is not as effective as the 3M product. If you opt for the rubbing alcohol, you will need to apply much more elbow grease in order to remove adhesive residue completely. I also recommend using a micro fiber towel which will keep scratching of the underlying paint to a minimum.
For stubborn areas, 3M markets an eraser wheel or stripe removal wheel that chucks onto a drill. This will remove the adhesive in no time.

WD-40 works with a little elbow grease and a rag. Toluene solvent works really well and is available at an ACE hardware store. Gasoline works also. Make sure you clean the residue off the paint.

Wow. i haven't done the 4th gen yet, but the 2nd gen emlems came off in less than 10 minutes using braided fishing line. The WD40 method took another 10 minutes, but worked like a charm as long as a good wash and some wax are applied soon after.
