Water in Fuel

Water in Fuel

During the last few weeks I've been getting the water-in-fuel (WIF) indicator up on the EVIC of my 2012 Ram. It started to go slowly, on and off. Sometimes remained on for many miles and then off for a lot more miles (up to 400 or so), then back on. Lately the indicator remains on. My dealer said that I have dirty fuel and I should change the filter and check the WIF sensor probes. I purchased the filter from Cummins and installed it today. In the process I did a thorough check on the condition of the fuel filter canister and the Sensor Probes. The bottom of the canister is clean, so are the probes. When I drained fuel, there was not trace of water and the fuel was clean. I installed the filter and got the engine back up and running without problems - but the WIF indicator on the EVIC remains illuminated. I checked through most of the posts on 4th gen engines, and could not find anything related to my issue. Thus I am forwarding this post. Perhaps someone has had similar issues and corrected them.

Make sure the electrical sensor connector is clean and has no fuel or water in it. Make sure the ruber seal is still there. If you unplug it and the light stays on then some where in the harness or connector the wires are shorted. If it goes out then you still have water in fuel or sensor is shorted.

Thanks for the reply. I have now disconnected the wiring harness from the WIF Sensor, the WIF indicator on the instrument cluster remains illuminated. I have to agree that there is a short or glitch in the system somewhere. One cannot follow the wiring harness as it enters a larger cluster of wrapped wiring. Who knows where it goes from there? This will be a ***** to troubleshoot. Further suggestions anyone?

Make sure the connector is spotless and there is no moisture or a fine piece of wire in there, blow it out with compressed air. Have a look at the connector on the ECM makes sure there is no water in there too. If the light remains on find where the wires go to then cut the connector off one wire at a time leaving a good length of wire on the connector for splicing. If the light still remains on then it's in the wiring and the easiest way is to run new wire and splice on the original connector. If the light goes out after cutting off the connector then re-clean the connector or get a new one.

OK, final diagnosis, the WIF sensor had an internal failure. Active code P2267. Tests indicated 5V present at sensor and 0 when jumper installed (checked by dealer). Sensor was replaced and all is well.

You can also drain some fuel out into a glass container. Give it some time to sit and you will see exactly what is or is not in it.

Thanks 1-2-3, Yes that's the first thing I did when the problem surfaced and would not go away via draining. No water in glass.
