Tranny Question

I was towing my 5th wheel trailer through the city traffic for about 20 miles or so before I got back on the highway. The built in tranny temp gauge on the dash vehicle readout was getting to 230 degrees. As soon as I got on the highway the temp started to drop and dropped fast.

Now, I have a couple of questions that come to mind;

1. Where is the tranny temp sensor?
2. What is the highest temp the tranny can handle based on the sensor location.

My plans are to replace the factory pan with the mag-tec double deep pan to help.

I want to make sure that I don't fry the tranny, but still ensure that I can pull the trailer without problems. Thanks for the help. Anthony

That temp is normal for unlocked operation in traffic. I wouldn't worry about it at all. No real need to a new pan. The temp sensor is on the valvebody in the pan. When the TC locked up is when you tranny temp dropped quick. Were you using towhaul mode? This should help.

I use the tow / haul mode and exhaust brake 24/7. Love the combo and the way the computer keeps the engine more in the powerband.

Yes, I use tow haul mode when towing. I just want to make sure that I don't over heat the tranny. Do you know at what temp is to high and the truck should be stopped to let the tranny cool? Thanks Anthony

230 should be fine as long as it cooled back down...250+ is when you want to start TRYING to cool it down.

IMHO,
Chris
