opinion on new clutch or gears

i need some help with my set up i gonna have a 4" lift with 35's put on soon i have enough for the lift, but only enough for either clutch or gears. i just done all the deletes last week with the h&s xrt pro on 60hp and have the g56 trans with 3.42 gears. wood it be better to have 4.10 or 3.73 put in or get a better clutch done i know i need both but only can do one for now thanks alot

I would think the 3.73's would be the best bet all around. Better gearing for the bigger tires means longer life and easier load on the clutch.

The gears should help you, but a clutch will be inevitable. My friend had a '07 2500 Megacab running a Smarty on the 60 hp tune. The truck had an 8" lift on 37s and he replaced the clutch at ~28,000 miles. Clutch came out and the facings were fine but the dual mass flywheel is the weak link. If you are relatively easy on it a clutch should last a while.

ANY more power than stock kicks the crap out of a Dual Mass... it did mine. And the poorly-installed CON OFE fell apart in 65,000 miles... I just hope it hasn't destroyed the trans; I am currently in the process of installing a dual-disc Valair.

The stock gears will be fine, run a dual disk clutch. They seem to hold the power better. The stocker is barely adequate for a stock truck. Throw a programmer and larger tires, its not going to last long.

You'll get better fuel mileage with the 3.42, if your towing heavy just don't put the truck into six gear.

G56 have issues with third gear, so try to avoid hard/harsh shifts with it. Seen a few break over the years. The G56 is an awesome shifting transmission, but not as durable as the NV4500 or NV5600 if you plan to work the truck.

I have this G56 tranny in my 07 so its not a 4th gen, but I think the tranny is fine for everything I do with it. I tow 24,000+ all the time and the shifting and driving ability is great. I had a 5600 and that tranny never failed, but it was a pain to drive compared to the 56. The clutch is the weak link.

Dont worry bout the gears now. Do the clutch. Then run it and see if you really need it. With 35's and the 6th gear ratio and 3.42's you may be perfect for your application. For mine it wouldnt work. But i dont run 35's either. When I had my 02 it had 3.55's and I ran 35's. When empty is was great. When towing, it would just smoke all day long at 60mph because I was at 1400 rpms. I regeared to 4.10's and it was awesome towing, but then I wish I had lower rpms when empty.

It all depends on what your specific application is. Do the clutch first though!
