Eninge Light

OK, I just picked up a 2012 Ram CTD with 221,800 km on it and after driving it a bit, the engine light came on. Is there a way to turn this off? What are my options here.

My engine light came on about 3-4 months ago and it was my 02 sensors which were replaced under my extended warranty (2010 3500).

Yesterday I went to pick up my 5th wheel for my trip down south only to have my engine light turn on again and I phoned my dealer plus one other to find I am out of luck until after the 27th of Dec. I was leaving the 27th!!!

My RV has been frozen into the ground (my fault, a long story) so my trip is off this year. I think I will just stay home and shovel snow!!!!!

Thanks Albertaguy, It is possible that this might be an oxygen sensor problem, but it could be something else. I also see I made a mistake on my initial post with the odometer reading on this truck. It is 22,800 km not 221800 km. I'm about 1800 km from home and need to get back after Christmas. Looks like I'll have to hit a local Ram dealer here in Kingston town. I sure don't want to drive that long distance home with that malfunction light on.

Nope I agree with you. I would not want to drive anywhere with the check engine light on. I did get an appointment early on the 27th of Dec. and they told me there could be up to a hundred reasons why it is on, so I won't take a chance. I decided I will go south but not until the 27th of January.
I was wondering about your mileage as I thought it was high but then lots of trucks here in Alberta come out of the oil patch and have lots of mileage on them.

By the way Kingston was my old stomping grounds both as a civilian and the military. I hear skates are in order this weekend in Kingston with your freezing rain storm. We just have snow and more snow and cold.

I have the edge insight on my truck, 2011. I have tripped codes a couple times and it's always the egt temp sensor. The code reads regen temp to low. I clear it and it comes back in a couple months

You are right, the weather and ice here in Kingston was unbelievable. Something I'm not used to. Perhaps driving in slow, congested traffic has caused this regen temperature to be too low and that this triggered the MIL on the instrument panel. Dogdave, how do you check the codes? Does this mean that I need to purchase a code reader to troubleshoot these possibly annoying MIL's and can they be reset with this code reader? But when one lives in this cold frozen north country, the ambient temperature will always be low and not help the regen cause. I'll check in with a dealer today to see what can be done.

My regen came on about a month ago and after a good drive on the highway the problem was solved.

My check engine light came on after I pulled up to my front door after a two way trip to the family farm which is quite a way from home so I don't think this is the problem.

Is the edge insight gauge pod easy to use? Is it expensive and does it read codes in plain English?

I've said it before, I'll say it again. 4th gen owners should have a code reader under the seat as standard equipment ($90). Not a hater, but listen- my 2003 had 100k on it when I sold it. Never threw a code- not once in all those miles. The 2006 threw a code with the #4 injector went out. The 2011 threw a code on average once every couple of months. Always minor stuff, but how do you know without a reader? 9 times out of 10 is something you can fix yourself, but again- how do you know without a reader? The other 10% of the time it's still good to know so you can go to the shop an informed consumer and not get taken.

Just an update, my 2012 Ram is still at the dealer, kept overnight for parts. However, reading all your posts, it appears that there is a code reader in my future. There is a Princess Auto here in Kingston and I'll likely check a unit out there if it is good. The edge insight gauge pod sounds interesting and I'll do some research on that one as well. I'll let you all know what the real problem with my unit was once I get it back from the dealer.

I doubt your dealer is open today the 24th but if it is and you get it back I sure would like to hear what they find. As I mentioned mine goes in on Friday, but something I noticed yesterday was that I had no power after I had started my truck and it took about 30-40 seconds to get acceleration. It would move ,but barely. The outdoor temperature was way warmer than it had been days prior. It was 5 degrees Celsius.

The Kingston Dodge dealer was open to 2pm this day. My truck was ready an hour before closing. The MIL coming on was diagnosed as Code 2271. A check for codes with witech pod found code p241a for which they checked the service bulletins that indicated replacement for both upstream and downstream O2 sensor connectors to clear it. The connectors had to be ordered, thus the overnight wait. The wiring harness was also replaced (pt. 68202815AA Wiring-6 Way). Apparently this was detected in Service Bulletin 25-004-13. I was told that the system compares o2 readings before and aft the catalytic converter and that in my case the before and after information was being interpreted in the wrong order; thus sending misinformation that eventually forced the MIL. Hope this all makes sense to all of our readers. I drove the vehicle about 23km to my daughter's place without a problem. I'll be travelling back home (about 1700km) within the next week - that might be the true test. Merry Christmas to all.

Glad to see that they were able to get you back on the road. Have a safe trip home and Merry Christmas to you and all as well. I'll post my findings on my truck.

Got my truck back this morning, and again it was the 02 sensors.

Told to drive it more, which is strange as I just go back from a 100 Km drive when the light came on.
