urea for 2011 cab and chassis?

heard a rumor from a friend that the new cab and chassis are going to urea instead of the dpf, wondering if this is true? If so will it be in the 3500-5500 or just the 4500 and 5500? just curious not liking the sound of this, the aftermarket has got the dpf system figured out now and i was actually liking the 6.7 now if they're gonna change it there goes that idea again.

Urea is for NOX control not for soot, so the DPF is still there.

well even worse, 2 kinds of smog rediculousness, are the standard 3500s gonna be this way? thought that the 6.7 was good untill 2013?
just something bout urea and freezing problems and the added crap on the truck put a bad vibe in my mind.

The 2011 3500 with a box doesn't has DEF only the Cab Chassis does. The engine is detuned to 300 HP for longevity and better economics. Using DEF in place of a absorber catalysts suppose to help with economy too.But the money you save on fuel you spend on DEF as it is kind of expensive right now but the price should come down in the future.

Have you seen what the price of diesel fuel is right now? You not only have to keep fuel in tank but now urea in 8 gallon tank also. Urea is very corrosive also and the truck will not start if you ever let DEF tank run empty.

Yeti,

How many miles can you go on on the 8 gallon urea tank and what does it cost / gallon?

What type of fuel mileage are you getting so far?

Well Chrysler does say the 8 gallon should be enough to get you from service to service that would be 12000 km but guessing how much DEF I put into the truck it's more like 16 gallon DEF to get 12000 km out of it.
As for fuel mileage I average 15.5 MPG with the truck always empty, I got better numbers in fall but with winter fuel now mileage has dropped a bit.
I track the mileage on here.

It's in L/100km

From what I heard with some of the tractors, it should be ~5% of the fuel usage.
I think when compared to the DPF regen process, you cost would actually be less.

I have gone through 5 gals of def in 2000 miles. most of these miles are plowing and mixed local driving. while plowing the truck is constantly in what feels like regeneration mode. also it is dumping def you can see it and smell it in the exhaust air. there are no problems with it freezing as it has been -18 many mornings here. if you feel the def lines into the exhaust they are hot so I would assume it is heated. if you are working these trucks I would heavily consider the poor mileage and def consumption as added cost. I know it has certainly dipped into my plowing profits. I thought the def and detuned motor were supposed to help with the economy on this. guess not.

I wonder if it is appropriate to include the cost of urea as part of vehicle mileage or as a maintenance item, like changing oil.

Last two weeks I pulled a 9K pound fifth wheel down to California and back after 4000 miles I used 5 gallons of DEF too.
DEF here in Canada is expensive compared to the US prices so I stocked up on it with a few jugs.
Did anyone found a way to delete the DEF system?

I'm not sure what to think about the fuel and def consumption. I think I would have gone a different route if I knew it would be this bad. I think I would have gotten a 5500dump and a small trailer versus the 3500 and the big gooseneck. hopefully with warmer temps it gets better.
pulling the 9k trailer what mileage were you experiencing?

Traveling 60-65 I got around 11 MPG.
I have a Work and Play with the rectangular flat front not the most aerodynamic trailer around, a wing on the truck or a rounder front cab on the trailer would improve the MPG.
