Where to tap into instrument lights on 03?

I installed gauges and I'm looking for the instrument light wire to connect the gauge lights. I probed (with my test light) the wires that come down from the light switch and some wierd stuff happens. I think some of them are inputs to the puter and not supposed to have any other load on them. I probed the purple/yellow wire and the test light stays off but the door-open/lights-on dinger stops. I probed the purple/white wire and the test light stays off but the instrument lights go to full bright even when the dimmer wheel is turned down. I probed the orange/white wire and that seems to be the correct wire - the test light goes bright and dim with the instrument lights. I just want to make sure it's OK to add more load to that wire. Fuse #18 kills the instrument lights but it is ahead of the dimmer wheel. I don't see any other way than to use that orange/white wire. Also, does anyone know which wire to cut to stop the door-open/key-in-ignition dinger. TIA! Craig

I just installed my gauges last night and that is the wire I used. Works fine. I wouldn't cut the wire. I used a wire tap. (plastic crimp type)

Thanks! Mine has red wire taps on several wires and I've been wondering if they are oem. The purple/yellow wire from the light switch has one - a heck of a place to get to! That's the wire I probed first, thinking someone before me had tapped it for gauge lights or something. I see those taps all over (in the dash) and wonder what anyone could have possibly done with all of them. Several wires right by the big, main harness plug (ahead of the park brake peddle) have them. It's obvious, someone before me messed around with wiring. The yellow wire coming down the steering column has been cut and put back together with a splice connector. Anyone know what that wire is for? Thanks again! Craig

The orange/white wire is what I always use for illumination. If you swap out your stock CD player, you'll see that the orange/white wire controls the illumination on the CD player, as well. That is definitely the wire you want to use.

With all the left over wire taps it sounds like someone had either a remote starter or an alarm hooked into the system at one time.
