What Dodge told me about BioDiesel

***, I called the "Service Manager" at the local Dodge dealer this morning concerning running Biodiesel blend in my 2007 CTD and he tells me that Dodge doesn't reccomend using any blend of Bio in the truck, even though i thought the Owners Manual says 20%??? I called another Dodge dealer and spoke to their service manager and he says no more than 5%. Any insight?

Also any one have a link to the owners manual PDF or something, only ones I can find ppl want $$$ to DL it.

Depending on where you are, or buy fuel, you can get up to 20% at the pump.
So, I say the ones telling you to use more than 5%, don't know what is at the pump!!!

Yep, around here, many pumps say "up to 20% bio" so you have no idea what you're buying. I've never had problems. I always use Stanadyn, tho, FWIW.

Where in Illinois are you, j-fox?

I live in Salt Lake City, UT, there is a Sinclair station near where I leave that is also a Red Hawk station, they sell B5, b20 and B100 Bio along with the normal 100% petro based Diesel. I normally fill the tank up to 3/4 with reg diesel and then go to the Red Hawk place and but b100 in it, maybe once a month or once every 2 months. Yes I change the fuel filter.

One of the dodge tech's told me that bio diesel is bad for the engine no matter what % bio is in it which is why I turn to you guys.

Service Managers are about as knowledgeable as anyone else with "manager" in their title.

Biodiesel is not bad for the engines if you have the proper filtration to run higher amounts. The City of Austin work crews mostly use bio with their fleet. Willie Nelson endorses the stuff and has been a major factor in its rapid spread.

I don't like to knock dealerships, but the techs only know how to run the computer to diagnose, half of them don't even keep up with the new trends in diesels and don't realize what is better than what they read in the service manual. You have your good techs though, a friend of mine John worked at the local dealer in Giddings, was the one who put my clutch in, and he knows his stuff. He actually encouraged me to mod the truck. Haven't had a problem since, so I can't say he was telling me that so I would break the truck quicker and have to get it serviced. Too bad they shut the dealer down.

But I'd have to say the best place to believe would be right here on DTR, we all pay attention to these kinds of detail cause we are just as concerned about our trucks as you are of yours.

Boy I'm in a typing mood today, i could go on forever!

That is correct. To keep the factory warranty only B5 is approved. B20 is approved for fleet vehicles but with filter upgrades. You can run it but if they catch it in your tank they can void your warranty. Not that I agree with it but that is just the way it is. Water in the Bio can be a major problem but if you get it from a reputable place I see no issues. Shell station near me only sells B5. Guess the major oil companies are starting to get into it now.
