Been told the 12v's were the best? easily modifiable etc? info?

ive been reading up and been thinking about getting another truck, and want to modify the hell out of it.
why?

Since i got the extended warranty on my 04.5 i dont think ill even touch it till the warranty is done.

so... heh
A friend of mine on the internet said the older 12v's were the best and most easily modified engines for making big ##'s in horsies and torque.
he also said the held up the best to this also.. very reliable..

is this true?

thanks for any help to get me deciding this out.

YEP!!! Your friend told you right. The 12V is a mechanicaly controlled engine. They have the ability to produce more power for less money too. You don't have to deal with electronics with them. You also don't need to modify the pump much either. Another plus is the lift pumps and fuel pumps are a WHOLE BUNCH more reliable too!!!

they were fairly cheap... or i thought so.. i have a feeling the price on them was for each

get a 96-98 5sp. biggest/baddest pump. a set of 370's will set you back about $375 or so I think... do a plate and a GSK, a clutch and put a bigger housing on the stock turbo and hang on! if you can swing a bigger turbo, do it, but yeah, they're cheap/easy to get power out of.

sorry, my broken english wasn't helping anything there!

what I meant was get the 96-985sp because they have the mack daddy 215 pump. a plate, GSK, and set of 370's will put out a LOT of fuel... with my HX40 set at 40psi, I can bury the 1600* pryo going from 70-105mph. and not to brag, but it gets there pretty dang quick for how much I've got invested in it... a lot quicker than the juice/attitude 6.0 powerstroke I ran the other night

Forrest, do you know if the 215 pump would fit a 95? Just curious...

I have a question, why would you WANT to bury your pyro, especially fast, wouldnt that be a sign of a bad setup? You want to goose it and NOT watch your EGT's run like the wind.

bad setup as in bad to the bone?

let's put it this way... before I cranked up the fuel, I would see 1300-1400* at about 100mph... but I was neck and neck w/ a stock Hemi from 70-100 just barely pulling away from him once I got over 2600rpm or so when I got on the full fueling portion of the #6 plate...

when I ground the plate down, I absolutely destroy a new Hemi from 70mph.

yes, I want my EGT's to not go over 1300, but I don't have money for twins, o-rings, studs, etc.

2-3 seconds over 1300* isn't going to hurt anything. wave your hand through a candle flame back and forth really quick... doesn't hurt does it? but try holding it there for a while!

when I was bragging that it happened pretty quick, I meant the truck goes from 70-105 pretty quick for what it is

I could dial back the fuel and egt's would be no problem... but I wouldn't be able to drag powerstrokes and hemis up and down the freeway

nobody WANTS to bury their pyro, the point was the pump is capable of putting out a LOT of fuel

yes, a 215 pump is a direct swap. if you can get a good deal on a good used one, jump on it, otherwise, you might be better off just having one of the high performance diesel shops build you a pump. they can usually build you a pump that'll outperform a 215 for less than a new/reman 215 would run you.

What you want is a regular cab, auto, between 94-98.5.
The auto injection pump is not what you will want for big power. Cummins only put the 215 pump on the standard shift trucks, so you will want to get a 215 pump and swap it. All the p7100 pumps are interchangable between years 94-98.5.
I would try and get a 94-95 myself as they have the 160 pump (the worst one), you should be able to buy that truck the cheapest due to the age and usually high mileage.

Now, now. The 160 pump isnt the worst. It just wont put out as much power hardly as easy. The auto trannys are expensive to upgrade, so consider that. It all depends how much HP you want, and what you want to spend to get it

interesting,

did the 12v trucks have any different options in 98.5 from like 95?

if there are a few nicer options in the 98's or something i would just jump on that.
heh

so i go with a larger pump right?

could you please explain "grinding a plate"

i have no idea where this fuel plate would be, since heh i dont have the truck.
and what it does.

So i have on my list of things to do when i buy the truck.

1) new fuel plate
2)pyro gauges
3)injectors?
4) larger pump????.... info here a little more needed
5)....

NOw the power area im looking at is hopefully 500/800-900
is that a fairly good place to hit?

If someone else on here has somewhere in the range of that how much did that cost yah for all the upgrades to tranny+ engine!

thanks for the help guys.

If your just looking for 500hp, then you can probably get that out of any of the stock pumps allright with the right setup, and save yourself some cash. The 98.5's have the new dash setup, and if you get a quad cab, all 4 doors open instead of just the 2 front ones. The fuel plate is in the injection pump. It can be ground flat with a grinder for probably at least 100 more HP. You definatley need gauges. A clutch upgrade if its a manual, and a performance auto if its an auto(they start at right around $3k dollars). An auto will be a lot faster, but i think a 5spd is more fun to drive, and they pull better. 370 injectors ive seen go on ebay new for about $300. They're actually pretty cheap for the power. If you keep the stock pump, youll want delivery valves, and youll definatley need a GOOD turbo to keep your EGT's down once you get to 500hp, or you could go to twins which isnt cheap either. 500hp is a lot. Its VERY dooable, and still a very streetable truck, because MANY on here have that or more, or really close to that, and drive them everyday. You'll need a 4-5 inch exhaust, and air intake too to help with EGT's. Good luck

Eric
